Sounds like sci-fi? Well, Luke Mortimer, a Quantum Information PhD student known as Lumorti, has made a bold step toward that vision. He created Quandoom, a version of DOOM translated into a massive quantum assembly file (QASM). This file uses quantum gates like Toffoli and Hadamard to simulate classical logic on qubits—an incredibly complex and mind-bending feat! 🧠💻

However, here’s the kicker: no current quantum computer is powerful enough to run Quandoom natively. To do so, we’d need a staggering 72,000 qubits and 80 million quantum gates—far beyond the reach of today’s machines. Instead, Quandoom runs on classical laptops through clever simulation, achieving about 10 to 20 frames per second. While not playable in the traditional sense, this simulation is a powerful proof of concept demonstrating the potential of quantum computing. 💥🖥️

The game itself is stripped down to an "X-ray" mode—meaning no colors, no sounds, and none of the usual DOOM secrets or enemy behaviors. Despite its minimalism, this version playfully answers the age-old tech meme: "Can it run DOOM?" We’ve seen DOOM run on everything from toasters to calculators, and now quantum computers have their turn in the spotlight. 🔍🎮

Luke admits he’s grown a bit bored with the project but encourages the community to contribute via GitHub.
