A man whistles as he walks to his garden at mid-morning. He finds her neighbor, Ms. Akulia, removing and making heaps of dried plant wastes. 

The man greets Akulia and then asks her why she is heaping the dried plant residues. Akulia replies, saying she wants to burn them before planting crops. The man interrupts her, telling her by burning the plant residues she degrades the soil fertility, deprives it of useful organic nutrition, and pollutes the air and worsens the harsh climatic changes. 

An agricultural expert warns community members against burning plant residues, stressing that plant residues are organic manure to the soil, provide heavy mulches to crops and trees by preventing excessive heat from stunting growth while retaining water for long period. This he says moves the community to a fertile land with green refugee settlement.

The Refugee Voice: #1 Introduction

In August 2024, unrest swept across the UK after the tragic killings in Southport, fuelled by online misinformation and weaponised fears about migration. In Bristol, the tension erupted in Castle Park and outside the Mercure Hotel, where asylum seekers were housed. The police presence was thin. The danger was real. And yet, what happened next was extraordinary, ordinary Bristolians put their bodies on the line to defend their neighbours.

We Don’t Do That Here is a one-hour audio documentary from Bristol's community radio stations - BCfm and Ujima, weaving together multiple in-depth interviews with those who lived it: refugees inside the hotel with their children, activists and local residents on the streets, police officers, youth workers, charity leaders, journalists, and community broadcasters. Their voices reveal the fear of that week, the courage of those who stood in solidarity, and the deep divisions that surfaced under pressure.

The programme also investigates the powerful role of media and misinformation, such as how a single false claim spiralled into riots, how national outlets inflamed stereotypes, and how community radio and grassroots networks became lifelines of truth. Listeners hear not just about what happened, but why, and what it tells us about Britain in an age of polarisation.

Above all, this is a story of resilience. From smiles through hotel windows to grandmothers holding banners, from grassroots charities to city-wide counter-protests, Bristol’s communities demonstrated that hate would not go unchallenged. This documentary asks: what does it take to keep a city safe, welcoming, and united, and what can the rest of the country learn?

From "Don't blink" (https://soundcloud.com/stefanlanfer/sets/dontblink), the modern folk singer-songwriter musical retelling of the first Christmas story from the perspective of the minor characters and minor moments that are full of fresh insights into a tale many of us thought we knew inside and out.

Narrator: 

After the shepherds and wise men were gone, when the first family were alone again, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. King Herod had learned the Magi were not returning as they had promised and he was incensed. He gave orders to kill every baby boy up to two years old in Bethlehem and its vicinity. 

“Get up,” said the angel to Joseph, “take the child and and go. Escape to Egypt. And stay there until I tell you. For Herod is already searching for the child to kill him.”

So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and they left for Egypt, where they stayed for years and years, until the Angel returned with news that Herod had died. The cloud of his vengeance had passed and the weeping of parents who would not be comforted - had long since subsided.

And that is why the baby king, who is called the Son of God, would spend his first years as a refugee and an immigrant.

A speaker from Drag Queens For Palestine asks a Glasgow crowd to find accommodation for two extremely fit young men who are refugees and is very disappointed and then has a hard hitting surprise.

Hard Hitting

A boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized off Langkawi, leaving many dead and many missing. Malaysian media quickly focused on “transnational syndicates” and police cooperation with Interpol. But that narrative avoids deeper questions about what happened at sea and how state policy shapes these journeys.

This episode looks at what is missing from mainstream reporting:

• Were Malaysian vessels tracking the boat?
• Was disembarkation delayed?
• Were boats pushed back into deeper waters?
• Did non-assistance contribute to deaths?
• Why are there no safe, legal routes?

Criminal networks exist because escape is illegal. When refugees have no way to move safely, smugglers fill the vacuum. The tragedy is not just a crime story - it is a policy story.
