As medical advancements continue to shape the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disability and illness, technology is often presented as a path to autonomy. Rebecca Monteleone shows how such technologies contribute to a cruel double bind, forcing disabled people to be accountable for adapting to a world built by and for nondisabled people while dismissing their lived experiences in favor of medical expertise. In the new book The Double Bind of Disability, Monteleone explores anecdotes about prenatal genetic screening, deep brain stimulation, and do-it-yourself artificial pancreas systems, exposing new relationships among disability, authority, knowledge, and responsibility. Monteleone is joined here in conversation with Ashley Shew. 


Rebecca Monteleone is associate professor of disability and technology at the University of Toledo and author of The Double Bind of Disability: How Medical Technology Shapes Bodily Authority.

Ashley Shew is a professor of science, technology, and society at Virginia Tech and author of Against Technoableism: Rethinking Who Needs Improvement.

Vincent's humble beginnings saw him playing records for private parties at the age of 16 locally in his hometown of Salerno. After years of experience cultivated in various clubs, he created a project called "Addicted to Techno" which encompasses a movement of clubbers throughout Italy. In 2018 he met the legendary Danilo Vigorito, an established world-famous DJ and producer, and became his pupil, producing an EP "Grade One" for Danilo's label Orion Muzik.
Since then, Vincent has seen victories and successes by releasing a number of other EPs, including "The Dream Come True" on AF Records, a well-known Swiss label, as well as having signed with the Colombian label "Techno Addicts Records" which released his EP "Back to the Roots".
The focal point of his career is certainly the meeting with Craft, a well-known New York producer, with whom he immediately establishes a beautiful musical relationship, landing with him in the underground techno scene of Detroit.
Since 2020 Vincent has started the project “My home is your Club” which is based on a series of improvised Live sessions together with a special guest at each session. The project is growing and will offer excellent surprises.

DJ G-Dugz has become one of the crowd favourites in Vienna. First of all G-DUGZ has been influenced by his family, who was very much into Soul, Funk and Classic Music. He remembers that they kept on playing music all day long. This really shaped the beginning of his career as a DJ and still does.
When he came to Vienna he always dreamed of being part of the DJ industry as well as he tried to pick up as much from other DJs as pos- sible. How they play, how the crowd reacted and how they really work. It very quickly became clear that this was his calling.
He started to play RnB at house parties for the first ye- ars and finally got the chance to show his skills at VIEiPEE club, since this is the first club playing RnB and Hip Hop in town.
Working at VIEiPEE opened some other very important doors for him. He now is part of the DJCITY Crew as well as he started to play interna- tional at clubs and become as well as he is a resident DJ at Volksgarten, Vienna.
