Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson, who co-discovered the C15 essential fatty acid, returns to the podcast to discuss her new book “The Longevity Nutrient: The Unexpected Fat That Holds the Key to Healthy Aging.” In The Longevity Nutrient, She unveils the science behind the first essential fatty acid to be discovered in nearly a hundred years. Research on this ingredient shows that is may be crucial for combating chronic aging-associated diseases. 

Dr. Venn-Watson is a veterinary epidemiologist with more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 70 patents. She is the co-founder and CEO of Seraphina Therapeutics, a company that develops and sells health and wellness products based on the C15 fatty acid. She discovered the health benefits of C15 while working for the U.S. Navy to continually improve the long-term health of Navy bottlenose dolphins. While seeking to understand why some dolphins were aging at slower rates than others, Dr. Venn-Watson applied an advanced technology called metabolomics on archived dolphin serum to discover which molecules predicted the healthiest aging dolphins. Here, she discovered C15.

Interest in healthier, longer lives is rising, supported by recent scientific advances in aging research. But turning those discoveries into everyday healthcare solutions remains a work in progress. In this landscape, longevity clinics have attracted attention as personalized alternatives to traditional medicine.

What Are Longevity Clinics?

Longevity clinics are private centers offering tailored programs designed to improve long-term health and slow biological aging. Using advanced diagnostics such as genetic sequencing, full-body imaging, and blood tests, they develop personalized plans that may include exercise, nutrition, hormone therapy, or experimental treatments. Frequently found in countries like the United States, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates, these clinics reflect a growing global interest in preventive healthcare, though their high costs and scientific credibility remain subjects of debate.

Longevity Clinics: Balancing Innovation with Regulation

In this week’s episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Kate Gordon about California’s recent raft of climate policies. Gordon, the CEO of California Forward who also has held senior policy positions in California and the US Department of Energy, discusses the various Senate bills that have been proposed and passed recently in the state. She talks about the importance of considering energy affordability when addressing California’s energy and climate concerns and what she’s noticed as evolving perceptions of carbon management. Gordon also touches on specific bills that extend California's cap-and-trade program and ramp up permissions for oil drilling, sharing her own take on the current state of climate policy in California.

The opening seminar, Do the Humanities Actually Matter? Public Policy and the Humanities hears from Peter MacDonagh, a former senior advisor in the Taoiseach’s Office whose career has bridged government and academia, and includes considerable experience in public policy and research in different countries. 

Speaker:
A former senior advisor in the Taoiseach’s Office, Peter MacDonagh has had an unusually broad involvement in public policy development, research funding and participation in pan-EU research programmes. Following studies in history in UCD and Cambridge, he worked for the now Taoiseach Micheál Martin when they developed the foundations for funding research in the Humanities. In government, he was substantially involved in deepening the engagement between academic research and public policy. Subsequently he served on the Board of Science Foundation Ireland, now Research Ireland, and as chairperson of its Grants Awards Committee. He has been involved with a range of large-scale Horizon projects and works on public policy and political research in different European countries.

Do the Humanities Actually Matter? Public Policy and the Humanities

Dr. Denish Shah, Kenneth L. Bernhardt Distinguished Department Chair and Barbara and Elmer Sunday Professor of Marketing at the Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University, discusses his groundbreaking research on a question vital to every business leader: From Data to Dollars - Linking Marketing Strategy to Financial Performance.

The episode explains that marketing often relies on vague output metrics that are poorly linked to revenue and profit, creating a disconnect with finance, and argues that marketing must be managed as a strategic investment tied directly to firm value. It presents Dr. Denish Shah’s research showing how customer lifetime value (CLV), as a forward-looking measure of customer value, can be used to predict stock price and align marketing objectives with CEOs’ focus on increasing firm value. The challenges in digital marketing measurement and attribution across online and offline channels, emphasizing the need to distinguish incremental sales from those that would have occurred anyway and to properly credit all touchpoints in the customer journey. Through case studies of two Fortune 500 firms, it demonstrates that CLV-centric strategies can drive stock price performance beyond benchmarks, while stressing that most of today’s firm value is intangible and heavily influenced by marketing-managed assets like brand and customer relationships.
