Great stuff, Scott. A film that has long lingered with me. At the time, I remember feeling like it was not just a great and insightful film about "the war on terror" and specifically the US adventure in Afghanistan, but that it felt like the definitive film about war in general and specifically the kind of men (in this case men) who are sent to fight our wars. Of course, I am no expert on wars, the military, soldiering, or even movies about these things, but what made the film so compelling for me, was not just how informative and enlightening it was, but how much fun it was to get to know these guys. At once, they are, collectively, the kind of stock soldiering types you'd see in any war film, but of course made all the more vivid and moving because they're real guys. A truly great film and one I hope more people check out. Thanks for sharing.


A few weeks ago, less than a month short of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, America finally withdrew from Afghanistan. It became the first time in years that the longest war in the country\u2019s history got headlines. That astonishing neglect was reflected by the movies, too. The war in Afghanistan never got its Apocalypse Now or Platoon or Casualties of War. Hollywood ignored it almost completely, unless you want to count the Tina Fey comedy Whisky Tango Foxtrot, which, fittingly, centered on the difficulty journalists faced in drumming up printable stories about the war. And for independent filmmakers, too, the war seemed as out-of-mind-out-of-sight as it did for a national media that did not have the patience or the attention span to monitor a quagmire. The great documentary The Tillman Story tells one important piece of this story through a football star, Pat Tillman, who lost his life to friendly fire after volunteering to serve\u2014but not before losing his faith in his country\u2019s purpose for being there.


The movies Restrepo directed in this decade were deeply concerned with women and their social status. Concurrent with her work in film, since 1977 Restrepo has written reviews and criticism for the newspaper El Pueblo from Cali and the magazines Nueva Frontera and Cine. In 1978 she served as producer and assistant director of the short film El cuartico azul (The blue room) by Luis Crump Carvajal. In 1980 she directed her own short titled Paraíso artificial (Artificial paradise) about a precarious relationship between a woman and a man. In 1989 she and other members of Cine Mujer left the group to pursue other projects.


Maybe it's a reaction to empty summer escapist movies like The A-Team and Knight and Day, but I've had a sudden urge to escape not from, but to reality. If you share that impulse, seek out a pair of unusually urgent documentaries, Restrepo and The Lottery.


Context, goals and accomplishments are deliberately withheld in a cinéma-vérité film like this one -- meaning a documentary with no narration or interviews with outside experts, and minimal interpolated information -- but they are crucial to understanding war, and to understanding why "Restrepo" paints a very different picture from Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar-sweeping "The Hurt Locker," although the movies are superficially similar. Both pictures are concerned with capturing war as soldiers live it in intimate and visceral detail -- the camaraderie, hilarity and boredom, along with the terror and death -- but of course Bigelow's film is a lavishly constructed fiction, while Hetherington and Junger spent a year with the men at O.P. Restrepo, putting their own lives at considerable risk. (As you can see below, "Restrepo" will be playing in several smaller, military-oriented cities that independent films don't often reach.)
