When I first began writing music, I wasn’t aware of the world of contemporary classical music. I wrote music that interested me, but didn’t have ways to categorize or contextualize what I was doing, nor did I have tools to critique my own work. Once I started thinking of my music in the context of the wider contemporary classical scene, I gained a perspective that allowed me to focus on specifics; my habits and outlook felt rooted in the stylistic trends of my era. I also gained a history for my music to fit into, something that was at once immensely helpful and challenging to deal with.
 
As an example, in the past century classical music has wrestled with its roots, and especially with the hallmarks of the tonal system. In my opinion none of these hallmarks is quite as powerfully indicative as the dominant chord quality, the major minor seven chord. It is incredibly functional in nature, with a strong pull to the tonic; so strong that it can establish a tonal center all on its own. It is so effective at establishing tonality that it was challenging for me to hear and to use the chord quality in any other way. My music has always been fairly tonal, but trying to use the dominant chord often pulled my music into a style not my own in jarring ways, usually to the styles of the Romantic era but also to those of jazz and popular music. As such, I have mostly avoided the dominant seven chord in my music except where I purposefully harken to those styles.
 
A few months ago, I decided to take some time to listen to genres of vocal music from different eras and from around the world, and included in that was various barbershop quartets. I noticed with some surprise that some of these songs were seemingly impossible for me to predict harmonically, moving in unexpected ways that nevertheless felt right. At the heart of these songs was the dominant seven chord and its variants, used in ways that I would have never expected. It made me reconsider how I had approached the chord quality up until that point. When I began writing A Pulling, I resolved to emphasize the dominant chord qualities that I had been shying away from. Critically, I was looking to develop a healthier perspective on the chord and learn to use it in ways that are appropriate in the context of my own music. 

Beyond the ever-present dominant chord qualities which I drew from barbershop quartets, I also drew direct inspiration from ornamentation used in Bulgarian vocal and instrumental music, in large part because of my brother’s recent wedding which included a traditional Bulgarian celebration. In particular, the first section of my piece draws heavily from sounds I first heard in the music of the Bulgarian State Television Female Choir.
