Spoon feeding students is a controversial topic that often gets talked about with a negative vibe. It’s certainly something that teachers complain about having to do sometimes in order to get results, and yet, it also seems like something that our education systems are trying to stamp out. Why is that? My guest today is Richard Andrew, who’s been working in teacher professional learning for the past 10 years, and now runs all of his courses in the online space. He recently wrote posted an article on LinkedIn as to why we shouldn’t spoon feed students, ‘claiming that spoon feeding robs students of the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning’. But still, the question remains why… why should we stop, given that the world has produced plenty of talented and highly skilled people despite our misgivings about our education systems. In this episode, I tease out this issue with Richard a bit further and suggest some practical ways to make the shift towards a more student centred approach to learning.

Without student engagement, is there any point in trying to teach anything? 
These days the education conversation is clearly shifting back towards learning, rather than school work. But what if your students aren’t engaged, or interested in what you think they should learn, or what the curriculum thinks they should learn? And what if teachers think that student centred learning is a great idea, but the students don’t. Surely not every student is enthusiastic about learning. Is lack of student engagement the elephant in the room… or the classroom? My guest today is Richard Andrew, a specialist in online learning. He’s had a wide range of experience in classrooms across Australia and interacted with hundreds of teachers through the professional development courses he delivers. In this episode we take a light hearted but serious look at possibly one of the most significant topics in the education debate.

Welcome to my page. 
This site is dedicated to all the talented people I've come into contact with and wonderful experiences I've been lucky enough to have had in making music since joining my first band from high school called Tom Kyffin's Bluesbreakers age 13 (1980) and after that The Glass Shop (1982).

I've uploaded a selection of the music covering all the different periods that I've been involved in - from playing in my first school bands (keyboards), to co-writing, aged 18, a submission for the BBC talent program "Opportunity Knocks" (1985), to engineering and producing in 24- and 48-track recording studios, to writing rough demos on my 4-track cassette tape recorder in my bedroom. 

Some of the music was recorded while I was studying for my diploma in sound engineering at SAE, London, others while working in a professional recording studio in Sydney called Paradise Recording Studios (http://www.music-industrapedia.com/businesses:paradise-studios-sydney), then owned by the wonderful singer/song writer Billy Fields (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Field_(singer)) who wrote the multi-platinium selling album "Bad Habits" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Habits_(Billy_Field_album)) or my favourite song of his the ballad "you weren't in love with me" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMer297X_LI).  During this time I was lucky enough to record some great music with talented (and now very well known) musicians.... Brendan Gallagher (https://brendangallaghermusic.com/home), two times ARIA award winner (then in The Leisuremasters) - check out the song Breaking up Hardwire - one of my favourites on my site) and the internationally successful - The Underground Lovers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_Lovers)(produced by Wayne Connolly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Connolly)). Also two very talented local song writers Baki and Freyer (or Freya?) (One Life and The Swan (1993))- would love to know what they're upto now.

When I came back to the UK from Australia I formed Reel-to-Reel with my close friends Tony Bross and Julian Boulter. Alex Coda joined on vocals and we recorded the tracks listed here including the still wonderfully pertinent song Rainforest (written in 1994) which I would love to record properly. 

After that band I spent many years writing at home with my writing partner at the time Tony Bross and on my own in my bedroom some song-ideas - also listed here - maybe one day I will get to complete them ! 

In the early 2000s I joined the band To The Fridge again with friends from school Paul Woolhead (sadly passed away in 2018) and his talented younger brother Marc and Marc's also talented friend from school Robert Whisker and again my dear friend Julian Boulter. We mainly wrote our own material and played live in some of the iconic London gig venues; The Hope and Anchor - Islington, The Bull and Gate - Kentish Town and The Rock Garden in Covent Garden. Some of the songs from the live performances are listed here too.
