The  rocks have come down and there's  no way round
The pumps have all stopped  lost the power
It's blacker than night and it's eerily quiet  
And it's flooding down here, I could sure use a beer

Girls On Call

I remember Elaine and the day we started school. Fresh scrubbed and smelling of soap orange drink and toast. Her navy blue tunic and blazer and hair shining in the morning sun. Mum's photo catching our worried eyes and brave smiles. Her hardboard case and my proudly genuine bullock hide schoolbag and web belt with the snake buckle.  Our shirts buttoned to the neck her hand so soft and warm. As neighbours we played and explored with enthusiasm and joy. 
There's an old photo of us at the New years eve party in the village hall. I'm glaring from my pudding basin haircut with strangled tie. Her mouth is set tight with sympathy in a short clown suit with four big pom-poms. As childhood years played out she coloured my world contented. Things change. The family left the bulldozers, parties and pine pollen, moving to the coast, so Dad could work his long line boat. Now I realize that I loved her and life will never be the same. Never saw her again but I still remember Elaine.

Fall In Love With Elaine

Late 1940's. Just after the war. We lived in an inland timber town and occasionally headed to the coast for the weekend with relatives. Borrowed grandpa Tommy's line-fish boat, dragged for mussels, burleyed for snapper. This is how I remember one trip. 

The Bush And The Boat

We escape from the pine trees and coast down the Kaimais
Scull to the workboat and let her slip free
Follow old estuary curves to safe harbour
Mince up some mussels   make the fish feed
The cockpit fills quickly with fat golden snapper
I'm sunburnt and satisfied  my hands are on fire

The bush and the boat give us wild pork and seafood

We head back at sunset to Tommy's calm mooring
 Sell to Nug's fish shop and buy crates of beer
A blaze on the sandspit with smoked fish and mussels
Out comes the squeezebox and loads of good cheer
As hoarse as the night    we crash in our castles
Then work in the bush in the morning

We were proud to call this land our home

There's this clock I brought in Townsville while cruising on the reef
A present for the old ones back at home
When wandering days were done   the oceans setting sun
led me to their open arms a-gain

The clock sat by the bedside its tinny tones would sing
and welcome each new morning bright and clear
The years passed slow since Mum died and the Old Man cried in-side
Her raincoat hung for-ever by the door
