Deep Into The Underground (18/11/23)

On this month’s SANTUARIO, VINSON performs live in studio. VINSON and Santiago just released a 3 track album titled “Break A Sweat.”

Brenton Vinson, also known as VINSON is recording artist, producer and songwriter from Detroit, Michigan, now based in Los Angeles, California. As a vocalist, rapper, and producer his music integrates many influences found in Detroit’s rich musical history from raw underground hip-hop, soul, house and techno. VINSON also draws inspiration from his families involvement in Detroit’s musical history with one great uncle being the lead singer of the iconic Motown singing group “The Four Tops” and the other singing for both “The Falcons” and “The Contours”. His debut project, U and Me at 3:03 includes a blend of deep house, hip-hop and futuristic soul and was featured in the new and notable section of the Bandcamp.com homepage. He has performed in support of hip-hop and soul artists such as Ghostface Killah, Goapele, DUCKWRTH and more. Also on his resume are official showcase performances at both SXSW in Austin, Texas and AC3 in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2021, remix EP of U and me at 3:03 showcased remixes from electronic music producers such as AshTreJinkins, Russell E.L. Butler and Benedek. He also joined on as a original resident at Oroko Radio based in Accra, Ghana looking to bridge the gap of the African diaspora through monthly program RBG Radio. VINSON released the mixtape “Loose Rap” in January 2022 as a postmodern interpretation of hip-hop and neo-soul genres. VINSON released his label debut “SoftSweetRadical” on Wichita Recordings in March 2023 which was featured in DJ mag, Bandcamp Daily and BET.

In this latest release, Rick delves into the depths of his soul to create a truly soulful sound. The EP opens with "Lonely Expedition," a track that begins with gentle yet poignant keys and expansive sounds, creating a sense of calm while building anticipation. As the track progresses, the smooth kick drums kick in, paving the way for the rest of the expedition with a familiar, heartwarming groove.

The following track, "My Soul," is a deeply evocative piece that features haunting vocals and captivating samples from classic films, all interwoven with a pulsating kick drum that underscores the profound journey of the soul. The EP comes to a close with "The Emperor," a steady ascent out of the soul with its ethereal beats, melancholic chords, and mellow baseline. The addition of a heartwarming sample from Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator" adds a revitalizing touch to this beautiful and moving track.

Michigan-born Rick Wade might not get the headlines of his more celebrated Detroit peers, but few have done as much to contribute to the house canon as he. For nearly three decades, Wade has consistently turned out deeply channeled grooves, utilizing every second of their often-elongated lengths. Peppered lightly with strings, an odd breathy voice or some other delicate hook culled from the funk and soul sounds of his youth, Wade's style is the perfect embodiment of minimalist production delivering maximum impact.

Viva Recordings found success with its first debut from Johnny Fiasco and the with Rick Preston's Altruism EP, which gained notoriety when "Spring Fling" was featured on Mark Farina's San Francisco Sessions Vol.1. From these early releases the road was paved for Viva Recordings' success. Over the last few years we have been working on personal projects but now have decided to bring the label back and take the Viva name back.
