As we continue to honor Valentine’s Day and all things LOVE, this week’s episode features the amazing story in first-time author, Danielle Kaplan’s book, I Married A Thrill-Seeker: A Cautious Wife’s Memoir of Her Husband’s Risk-Taking and Their Long Road to Recovery. The book recalls the tale of Danielle’s type-A and adrenaline-junkie husband, Stephen Kaplan — former CFO and CEO of Deciem Beauty Group — as he sets off to take one last solo road trip on his motorcycle, from Toronto, Ontario to near Fairbanks, Alaska. Danielle knows it’s the last ‘adrenaline rush’ trip he’ll take on the bike–he’s promised to give it up for good. 

 

On the other hand, Steve expected to make it home with no drama, no unnecessary risks, just the freedom of the open road and the wind on his face. But after hitting a pothole while driving at a high speed in rain at dusk, it’s the ending neither of them dreamed of when he crashes on a remote highway in the Yukon, he can’t move, and its hours before he can receive medical treatment.

 

In this candid interview, Danielle and I sat down to discuss how this event changed her, her husband’s and her children’s lives in an instant, how she came to terms with Steve’s adrenaline-junkie antics & found an appreciation for it amidst having to make unbearable decisions, experiencing miraculous moments, how as a former speech pathologist she became her husband’s greatest advocate - fighting by his side the entire time, through every step forward and step back as Steve regained his health and lots more in what can only be described as a true testament of luck, love, and incredible fortitude given Steve’s injuries that left him with a less than one percent survival rate.

Hello, and welcome, dear listeners, to another episode of the Julio Verissimo Live Show. On this episode we will explore how creating a vision and taking risks can help us achieve sustainability goals and a more environmentally conscious future. I’m your host, Julio Verissimo, and I couldn’t be more excited to guide you through this enlightening discussion alongside a distinguished guest, John Graham, an influential figure in the realm of social change.

John is the Executive Director of the Giraffe Heroes Project, a global nonprofit that moves people to “stick their necks out” to help solve pressing public problems, from an environment in crisis to crimes against women. It does this by telling the stories of heroes already in action, stories that inspire others to take action and become agents of change themselves. The Project has also created a curriculum helping young people build lives as courageous and compassion in citizens.

But for John, the Giraffe Heroes Project is a second career. A U.S. Foreign Service Officer for fifteen years, John served in Libya during the 1969 revolution and in one of the most difficult and dangerous areas in Vietnam during the war there. For three years in the mid-seventies, he was a member of NATO’s top-secret Nuclear Planning Group, then served as a foreign policy advisor for Senator John Glenn. During a posting at the United Nations, however, his life began to turn. He became deeply involved in U.S. human rights initiatives, including the fight against apartheid in South Africa. That experience led him to leave the Foreign Service and build a remarkable career inspiring and empowering individuals to make a positive impact on the world

For the last forty years, John himself has played a pivotal role in driving tangible social, political and environmental change, acting not only through the Giraffe Heroes Project but also through his books, blogs, speeches and personal involvement in peace-building initiatives all over the world from Cambodia to the Middle East.

Through all his work, John is a firm believer that good intentions, smart planning and dogged persistence, while essential, are almost never enough to solve huge problems like building a sustainable future. Success also demands creating a powerful vision for change and then taking the risks to make it real. John, a visionary with a lifetime of risk-taking, is both a model and inspiration for doing that.

Together, we’ll explore the intricate nuances of creating change, focusing on the key elements of vision and risk-taking, hopefully shedding light on both challenges and opportunities. S1:EP9 - From Employee to Entrepreneur: A Bold Move with Wyatt Lewis

Feddi, born Demetrius Robbins, has a story to tell. It’s punctuated by pain, bound by betrayal, and has as much family drama as a Shakespearean play. But the setting isn’t some far-flung European city ruled by kings and nobility. Feddi is from Zone 1, Westside, Atlanta. An infamous neighborhood where life is a gamble, and even if you play your cards right, you can still lose it all. This is the hood that raised him, nurtured his love of music, and where he made his name in the streets. Feddi’s life story is worthy of a feature film–but his music has a documentary quality. And his story doesn’t just represent him. It also describes the voiceless people that grew up in neighborhoods like Zone 1 all over the world.
Tragedy struck Feddi’s family when he was just in second grade. In a story so gruesome that it was depicted on the TV show ATL Homicides, Feddi’s father was kidnapped, tortured, and ultimately murdered by his own cousins. “I stayed outta school for two years,” he recalls. “Like a whole two years, I didn’t go to school. APD sitting outside my house. Cause ain’t nobody locked up. Don’t nobody know what’s going on.”
Feddi’s dad, known affectionately as Deke the Freak from Cairo Street, was a well-known and respected figure in the neighborhood. So even though he was tragically killed, that respect and love extended to his son after his passing. “I had to live up to the name. But just being his son, it had me being taken care of. That led to me not ever having to worry about where I’m sleeping at. Where I’m gonna eat at. It wasn’t not one house in the neighborhood I couldn’t walk into. If I’m hungry, man, I’m finna to eat. It might be a different house every night,” he recalls.
Even having experienced something so heinous as a kid, Feddi never sought traditional therapy. Instead, he used music as an outlet to release his pain. “I cry the most when I’m making my songs. I might think of a line or something, and my voice might get to shaking while I’m trying to record. Cause I’m talking to myself as I’m going,” says the Atlanta native. “This is my outlet. I’m gonna probably do this for the rest of my life. Even if I’m not putting that out. Just so I can hear myself talk to myself.”
His earliest experience with music was born out of the ingenuity that comes from having to make do with whatever you have. “My friend down the street had a little radio boom box that you was able to press a button to record what you were saying,” remembers Feddi.” We had some instrumentals on the old, old, Xbox. Like the first Xbox ever made.We turned the TV up loud, played the instrumentals off the TV, and put the radio close to the TV so it could pick up the beat and pick up our voice.”
This was one of the first songs he ever made, and even though it wasn’t recorded in a professional studio, it was Feddi’s first clue that he had natural talent. He gained comfort performing in front of larger audiences at school talent shows. He was also surrounded by music in his own home, his mother was an accomplished singer, and his sister tried her hand at rap at a young age, too.
What further solidified the possibility of actually making his musical dreams come true was seeing someone else from his hood behind to make it big a few years later–1017 Records/ Famerica signee Ralo. “I knew it was real when I seen my brother Ralo actually get himself known to be a rapper,” says Feddi. “Me and him grew up together. That’s my brother. Both of us Muslim. And we from the same spot.”
That inspiration didn’t immediately lead to his own success, though. While more and more people began to recognize Feddi as an up-and-coming talent from Atlanta, he ran into
obstacles that kept his music from reaching a larger audience. “I’ve been lied to a million times. Supposed to have been signed a million times. And I turned down a couple offers too.”
Now he’s decided to take his future into his own hands. Along with his family, he started Cairo Street Records, a nod to the hood that raised him. “I’m doing all this shit with all these other folk. Helping them build their thing up. I’m like, let me go back to my own hood and start my own shit. I think I done learned enough and been through enough to know what to do now.”
And through it all, he’s still here. Still rapping. Still hustling. Still putting his pain into his music. Still speaking for those who can’t speak for themselves
