Numa manhã qualquer de agosto de 1982, o cantor e compositor Ritchie acordou com uma melodia na cabeça. Ainda sonolento, no Rio de Janeiro, tocou os acordes sonhados no teclado Casiotone que a mulher, a arquiteta e estilista Leda Zuccarelli, tinha comprado em Nova Iorque.

Naquele mesmo dia, Ritchie recebeu a visita de Bernardo Vilhena. Na descida de Nova Friburgo, região serrana do Rio, o poeta começou a rascunhar os primeiros versos de uma nova canção: "Menina Veneno". Sua inspiração veio do livro "O Homem e Seus Símbolos", de Carl Gustav Jung, que ganhara de aniversário de dois ex-companheiros do Vímana, banda de rock progressivo dos anos 1970: Ritchie e Lulu Santos.

Com a cabeça fervilhando de ideias, letrista e compositor logo se trancaram num dos quartos do duplex para burilar a canção. Ou, como diria Ritchie, "montar o quebra-cabeça".

A toda hora, eram interrompidos por Mary, a filha mais velha do cantor, que tinha acabado de completar dois anos e estava aprendendo a andar. De fraldinha, ela subia as escadas e, triunfante, abria a porta do quarto. Na terceira ou quarta vez, Bernardo soltou uma risada e, bem-humorado, resolveu incluir a frase "Ouço passos na escada / Vejo a porta abrir…" na canção.

"Em 20 minutos, a música já estava pronta. Nunca mais fizemos outra tão rápido!", relata Ritchie, hoje aos 71 anos. "A menina veneno da canção não é uma pessoa; é uma aparição. É uma figura onírica, muito sensual e quase mitológica".
