Episode 027 - The Endless Stash Vol. 002 - Southern Vangard Radio

What up March goers,
 
To say the least, this month has been a crazy one. Hip-hop and the world over lost one of the most notable MC’s of all time, Phife Dawg (Malik Izaak Taylor) of A Tribe Called Quest. Phife Dawg and Tribe were monumental for me. They were one of my first major influences in hip-hop and still are to this day. I strive to make as classic of music as Tribe did, the formula they created was contagious. I look at ATCQ as the Beatles of hip-hop. Loosing Phife is comparative to loosing John Lennon.
That said, I had pulled out a crate of records and started making NBR episode four but when I received the news about Phife I scratched that mix and created a tribute to the 5 Foot Assassin.
I had originally spoken with Rob Swift of the legendary X-Ecutioners. We spoke on his progression throughout the industry and what that means to him, as well as the song Scars & memories by MF Grimm, which Rob produced. A resident of Queens, I thought it necessary to get Swift’s thoughts on Phife and called him for a second interview.
As well, CX KIDTRONIK shared a story about Phife and Tribe. Phife Dawg and ATCQ touched and changed everyone within the hip hop culture in someway, as well as popular culture and music in general. I am happy to celebrate Phife Dawg's music and life with this latest episode. I have more recorded with rob Swift, which unfortunately got cut but I will e releasing in the near future.
In addition, in the past two months we have lost many creative individuals, two of them being Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane and Maurice White of Earth, Wind, and Fire. I wanted to share my gratitude to them in this episode.
I have attached the private prisons petition to this newsletter, if you haven’t signed it please do. I will attach it every time, until we meet our goal. Private prisons = for profit prisons. Bad deals. Lets get em out of Colorado.
RIP Phife Dawg, Paul Kantner, and Maurice white. Thank you for the inspiration, creativeness, and beauty you brought into our world.

Our 90th release comes from the vaults of The Beatnuts' own PSYCHO LES! Formed in 1988, 2*2*4 (2 BAD 2 BE 4 REAL) consisted of Psycho Les, JMD, Universal and cuts by Rob Swift. 2*2*4 only released one single back in 1988 ("ILL Tempo" b/w "I Don't Play") and that was it... until now! Psycho Les has gone through his DATS to find the demos that would've made up their full length album. This 12" features both tracks from their only official release, and 6 previously unreleased tracks! Straight from the DATS of Psycho Les, these are the only existing tracks of the group! We did our best to clean up these raw demos to compile an 8 song historic document that kicked off the careers of Psycho Les, and Rob Swift! Limited to 350 copies (50 colored vinyl, 300 standard black) and never to be repressed. This is the BLACK VINYL version.

Jay Electronica said it best to a packed house at the Brooklyn Bowl after hearing Bobby perform - “this man right here is a bearer of witness that times are changing. This man has BARS!”

Growing up in Rockaway Beach, Queens, NY, Bobby was immersed in a plethora of musical inspiration—from his mother’s love of classic rock to his father’s affinity for disco, soul & Motown. It was his brother though who, aside from grunge & metal, introduced him to Hip Hop. “He was my gateway drug,” Bobby says. Bobby began his ascent into the industry at the young age of 13 when he met "The Rhythm” rapper Kwamé, who at the time had begun his reemergence in the industry as a producer.  “I honestly don't even think I could rap when I met him,” Bobby admits. “Kwamé saw something early on & just took me under his wing. He coached me on how to make the transition into making records.” Bobby describes his time under Kwamé—who has since sold over 30 million records as a producer—as a period of artist development. Ultimately, Bobby, whose sound & style are an ode to the era that birthed him, hopes his music can help inspire the imagination of new listeners.
