Timeline finds two of the conceptual electronic world’s most earnest players teaming up for an extended improvisational session that pushes each party’s respective boundaries while emphasizes their inherent sonic charms. Jesse Osborne-Lanthier is the Berlin-by-way-of-Montréal transplant largely known for his racketous bouts of rhythm with Bernardino Femminielli (as Femminielli Noir) or drifts of minimal techno with Hobo Cubes’ and Hobo Cult-head Francesco De Gallo (as the H). Robert Lippok is the Berlin native who spent the past two decades as one-third of seminal electronic post rock band To Rococo Rot (Domino, City Slang, Staubgold).

Executed in a one-shot jam-session and loosely inspired by a designed timeline that was exchanged back and forth throughout the months prior to the artists physically meeting, Timeline’s songs react and adapt from moment to moment. “Aperiodic” maintains a sordid simmer of modular patches, kinetic clatter, and curiously paranoid melodies that launch the set’s open-ended purview. “Many a Moon” wades in an oceanic drift of tidal throbs and electrified air, forcing the hand of fellow tectonic, textural meditators to reveal their bluffed mechanics. “Visit” is a potent dose of noirish avant-gamelan, operating a surrealistic and schizophrenic account of some anonymous, foreboding follower.

“Haste” opens the B-side in a minimal torrent of industrial static and meditative, metallic dust, perfectly setting the scene for the melancholic modality of “Stint,” which traipses through air with the muted beauty befit for Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project or the similarly minded minimalists of Mille Plateaux. The bucolic bleakness eventually dissolves into the heightened obsession and sardonic seduction of “Allotment,” exploiting micro-house’s sublime ambivalence to ante up the genre’s heady hedonism into more abstracted terms. “Juncture” closes out Timeline in a subdued fit of glitched beauty, fixating on a series of micro-tonal epiphanies and refined resonant frequencies.

Positive or negative, only time would tell. Life and death depended on the outcome but at present he remained calm, cool and collected. He had little choice. That plus or minus would determine the very course of his future, his existence, his soul. The hour would come, and soon he would know all. However, for now, he was happy to sit and wait, watching the wall, before an outcome was revealed. 
Flau is a record label of which you might be unfamiliar with. Based in Tokyo, Japan they have been operating since 2006 and have remained low key and under the radar of many. Mid June saw the release of 'Open Close Open' : a four track EP from Robert Lippok. And whilst we aren't in the habit of premiering music which is already out in the open, this seemed like a perfect opportunity to showcase something from the unknown.

with »redsuperstructure«, robert lippok created a new foundation for his musical endeavors. now – 7 years later – this system properly comes to life on »applied autonomy«. the title of the new album is a clear indicator as to what the berlin-based producer has been up to during the last couple of years, both on a conceptual level as well as how he molds his ideas into tracks.

»applied autonomy« orchestrates a certain state of frantic standstill, which occurs once a structure is set. has this state been reached, the artist is free to focus on other equally important aspects, balancing the various shades, pushing ideas even further to really make them shine and blossom in their self-declared autonomy. the more light one lets in, the more layers become visible.

layers are key when it comes to understanding »applied autonomy«. big chunks of the material with which the album has been produced derive from sketches specifically made for a club performance.

rather than meticulously devising each and every detail, lippok focussed instead on recording as many fragments as possible in a short period of time, elements which he could later combine and layer on stage. based on this material and his experience experimenting with it in a live environment, the album slowly began to shape. an album culminating in a collaboration with klara lewis, with whom lippok spent 2 days at the EMS studios in stockholm, approaching the idea of autonomy from yet another angle. during the session, both musicians played and performed simultaneously, yet not explicitly together, lost in their own thoughts and ideas, only subconsciously taking in what the other one was coming up with. the result is »samtal«, 14 minutes of a constantly evolving state of poise, magically connecting all the dots lippok had already defined as »applied autonomy«.

the artwork for »applied autonomy« has been created by the berlin-based argentinian artist luca gutierrez. over the last couple of years, he has made a name for himself with his spectacular AV performances.
