Tüm bu güzellikleri rüzgarlı bir havada deneyimlerken, önümüze taşlarla özenerek yapılmış oldukça eski bir ahır denk geliyor. Merak edip çatısı bile kalmamış ahıra girdiğimizde, kocaman kayaların arasından fırlamış bir akçakesme ağacına dikkat kesiliyoruz. Ağaç oldukça yaşlı, her halinden belli. Rüzgarın şiddetiyle kulaklarımız, gördüğümüze ağır basmaya başlıyor. Kayaların arasından fırlamış ağacın gövdesi ve kurumuş büyük dallarından çıkan ses, bize ağacın yaşama inadını işitsel olarak sergiliyor. Her bir dal, her bir yaprak, yaşama tutunmanın birer hatırlatıcısıydı.

Ellen Morris Bishop is a geologist, photographer and award-winning author. One of her earlier titles, "In Search of Ancient Oregon: A Geological and Natural History," received the Frances Fuller Victor Oregon Book Award in 2004.  She serves as the conservation representative on the Oregon Department of Forestry's Independent Science and Research Team and lives on the southern flank of the Wallowa Mountains not far from Halfway, Oregon.
