Mushtown Rite

This was my submission for Ryan Leach's April 2023 composing competition.

I titled the piece "Stropharia" based on the mushroom theme, as given by the artwork's blueish hues and blueish mushroom Diety (?) that seems to be central in the town. The instrument choices as well as the intro were based a bit scientifically on how mushrooms "communicate" with one another, as well as the somber and echoing chambers on how they actually grow and connect to one another. (Yes, I went- THAT FAR- in my research.)

The Angry Farmer

I wanted to write something grand like the canyon, something as strong as the rocks themselves. I used a full orchestra with big hitting percussion. I gave it an overall masculine vibe, opting to bring in a male choir towards the end. I stuck with the cliches of cowboy western music for the instrumentation.

My interpretation:
Within the heart of the magical Mushtown, our hero embarks on a pivotal rite of passage, seeking enlightenment from the enigmatic Sporacle. Under the spell of the sacred mushroom brew, he becomes immersed in the celestial harmonies of the mushroom people, their voices interweaving like delicate mycelial strands. What mysteries will be revealed?

Cosmic Equilibrium

Finalist in the Ryan Leach April 2024 Composing Competition. 

I wanted to try to capture the feeling of approaching the island of Mont Saint-Michel and seeing that majestic structure rising up out of the water. I started with a short motivic idea on a solo flute as we first spot the island on the horizon. As the full size and beauty of it is revealed upon our approach, this idea is carried forward into the entire orchestra, finally heralding our arrival to the island.
