This recording explores the ferry ships that crossed the River Tay from Fife to Dundee before the Tay Road Bridge opened in 1966.
From the first steamboat Union (1821–1836) to the last ferry Scotscraig (1951–1966), the Tay ferries evolved from wooden paddle steamers to diesel-powered vessels with Voith-Schneider propellers, designed to carry both passengers and vehicles safely across the often treacherous river.
Notable ferries include:
Union – first steamship, double-hulled wooden paddle steamer
Fifeshire (1858–1929) – first with a deck saloon, served 71 years
Forfarshire (1861–1893) – charter vessel, later served on the Forth and in WWI
Dundee (1875–1917) – first on scene at Tay Bridge Disaster
B L Nairn, Abercraig, Scotscraig (1929–1966) – later diesel ferries with car decks and advanced maneuverability
Passengers could travel on deck or in saloons, with tickets ranging from 1d to season passes. Weather conditions often tested the crews, from fog and storms to ice floes, and passengers often recall standing on deck in awe at the raw power of the river.
The Fifies remain a cherished memory for locals and visitors alike—providing both a practical transport link and a scenic escape from city life.

Ferry To Dundee before the Road Bridge

This recording brings together memories of the ferries that crossed the River Tay from Fife to Dundee, capturing voices from local people who travelled, worked, or had family connections to the service before the Tay Road Bridge opened in 1966.
For hundreds of years, ferries linked communities on both sides of the river. Early sailboats were often overcrowded, irregular, and unsafe, with fares changing daily and crossings delayed until boats were full. Following a tragic accident in 1815, regulation improved safety, with the Tay Ferry Trustees introducing reliable crews, regular sailings, and tickets.
The arrival of the first steamboat, Union (1821), marked the start of a new era. Subsequent ferries—Fifeshire, Forfarshire, Dundee, B L Nairn, Abercraig, Scotscraig—evolved from wooden paddle steamers to diesel-powered vessels capable of carrying passengers, vehicles, and even livestock. Many had saloons and deck promenades; passengers often preferred the fresh air of the upper deck, walking for exercise or simply enjoying the view.
The ferries faced all kinds of weather—fog, storms, snow, ice floes—and yet remained a lifeline for commuters, pleasure travellers, and locals. The final crossing on 18 August 1966 aboard the Scotscraig marked the end of an era, shortly after the Tay Road Bridge opened.
These recordings preserve the memories, stories, and sounds of the Tay ferries, keeping alive the voices and experiences of generations who knew the river before it was bridged.

Our Sonic Museum project will build an audio collection highlighting the cultural, human, and natural wealth, history, and diversity of communities across North East Fife and the East Neuk – a digital storehouse of land, sea and people stories. The Sonic Museum will allow collaborations with heritage, community groups and arts organisations, encourage community involvement, and allow people to learn new skills, produce podcasts, write, perform and explore their creativity.

Recent funding from the Community Learning and Development Device Fund managed by SCVO has led the charity to develop a new initiative called The Sonic Museum. A field recording lending resource (comprising 12 professional digital field recording kits) allows communities to explore the impact of sound on our lives, capture memories, nature soundscapes, songs and sonic postcards. Four pilots are underway with the Youth Ambassadors affiliated with Balmerino, Gauldry, Kilmany and Logie Community Council, St Andrews Heritage Museum and Garden, and volunteers from Kilmany Parish Hall in the remote village of Rathillet and the Hamlet of Collessie. 

We have also started a collaboration with the Fife Writes Charity, a peer support group for published and unpublished writers. This new collaboration will further enhance the Sonic Museum's content, allowing members to record spoken word, short stories, poetry, and audio plays that bring landscape, history, and heritage to life.

I mainly write melodies, my pieces usually consist of a lot of melodic content and are melody driven. My music is multi-instrumental, I use many different instruments.. Many of my pieces contain more notes than a Pop song, less notes than a symphony. 

I compose music in many genres: Children's, Jazz, Melodic, Ethnic, Space, Halloween, Classical, Southern/Western, Rock. My music encompasses a lot of variety, it is eclectic. All my pieces have been notated, contact me and send me your email address if you want free PDF's of particular compositions. I currently use Sibelius 7.1.3 and Noteperformer. I have been writing music since I was in Junior High School, I have some songs with lyrics, but most are instrumentals. I was in band in High School and College, and I have been a member in several choirs as well.

Ben Bostick is becoming hard to define.

Following five lauded Americana albums, Bostick’s latest offering finds him light years away from the well-traveled country roads on which he made his name. Become Other owes more to Reznor and Beethoven than to Haggard or Cash. Many listeners familiar with the artist’s catalog will be shocked that this genre-bending mythical song symphony flowed from the same pen as the greasy blues rocker “Feeling Mean,” but his sure-handed treatment of the new opus is sure to entice the brave and curious among them to join him on the journey.

Bostick traces his radical creative departure to the rise of AI generated music, and to one specific moment. “I was listening to an AI country song my friend sent me when my wife walked into the room and said, ‘Who is this? I love her voice!’ At that moment, I knew everything was different.” 

Alarmed by AI’s ability to convincingly write and produce music in existing styles, Bostick determined that an artist’s role is to aim for something higher. “One thing AI can’t do is produce things of real meaning,” says Bostick. “It can only produce facsimiles of meaning.” With this idea in mind, Bostick embarked on a radical experiment in meaning, which led to the birth of Become Other. Every word, every note, every sonic gesture of the album’s opening is transformed and reworked into the material that forms the music to come. Everything is connected; everything has meaning.

The album’s narrative centers on the protagonist’s despairing confinement in a place called The Tangle and his eventual metamorphosis and emergence into a World Without Measure. It is structured in four symphonic movements, each of which depicts a stage in the hero’s journey. Movement I is a realm of despair, but with just enough hope to justify life. Movement II is an attempt to find temporary relief from the misery, but the hero’s superficial efforts plunge him into even darker places. Movement III finds the hero struggling against his mysterious enemy, who, as he realizes in an painful epiphany, is himself. Movement IV is the hero’s metamorphosis and emergence into a world of limitless vision, his affirmation of strength, and a prayer of thanksgiving.

This psychological myth is woven into a tapestry as thick as Wagnerian musikdrama and as dense as an Emily Dickinson poem. Perhaps if William Blake had set his visionary works to music, they would have sounded like Become Other. Over the course of the four dramatic movements, listeners will experience the hero’s journey from despair to glory, confinement to freedom, blindness to manifold vision. This is music of epic scope and universal truth, a primal myth of personal struggle and overcoming.

Bostick is cutting a new path of limitless imagination, bounded only by the desire to make art of profound meaning. Well aware that forsaking the confines of a well-defined genre will confuse some listeners, Bostick is nonetheless unwilling to be artistically restricted by marketing concerns. “I just wanted to make an album that would have blown my mind as a 14-year-old. Not a piece of content. I know this album isn’t for everyone, but I know there will be some teenager somewhere who will put on their headphones and go, ‘Wow, I didn’t know music could do this!’ That’s who this record is for.”

It is uncommon in the world of music to witness a creative turn so extreme; even more rare is to suddenly see revealed such an unexpected depth of artistry and astounding compositional versatility. Clearly there is more to Ben Bostick than we thought—and clearly there are exciting things to come from this artist.
