Joseph Stiglitz is a world-renowned economist and thinker who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001. 

I met him in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, in June 2025 during the inspiring Zeg Festival in which we both participated. 

In this podcast episode, we spoke about his latest book, "The Road to Freedom", published last year, and about how flawed ideas of freedom can ultimately undermine freedom itself. I also asked him what the world can do to stop Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.

Common prosperity or common destitution? The drive to war against China must be resolutely opposed. China has made considerable efforts to show the world that its aim is peaceful coexistence and mutual and beneficial development. But the imperialists are incapable of ‘coexisting’ on equal terms in a world populated by free and sovereign peoples. Imperialists need domination in order to maintain their global machinery of wealth extraction, without which their continued existence as a parasitic class is doomed. As their system’s economic crisis gets deeper, their need to regime-change and subjugate China is becoming ever more desperate.

Понимая это российские вузы А также частные игроки образовательного рынка оперативно поставили на поток выпуск кадров по обходу санкций. Одним из лидеров нового учебного направления стала Высшая школа экономики. В НИУ ВШЭ работает четыре программы по санкционному комплаенсу.  

T-invariant изучил программы по санкционному комплаенсу в ведущих вузах и попросил академических экономистов оценить новый тренд.

"Все смотрят, как Иран живет под санкциями 40 лет. Руководитель программы "Санкционный комплаенс" в Вышке — доцент МГИМО, гендиректор Российского совета по международным делам (РСМД), руководитель программы «Институты евроатлантической безопасности» Валдайского клуба Иван Тимофеев. Интересно, что Тимофеев не занимает никакой должности в НИУ ВШЭ, а образовательная работа самого специалиста и его коллег напоминает гастрольный «чёс» в высокий сезон: параллельно с Вышкой обучаться санкционному комплаенсу можно еще в самых разных ЧЕТЫРЕХ местах

«Многие настоящие профессора Вышки уехали, а многие просто не станут этим заниматься. Они были ориентированы на право в мировом контексте, и у них была задача гармонизировать российское право с мировым, люди этому учились, этому учили, преподавали. А эти новые программы — они не про право, а про то, как право обойти. Поэтому если посмотреть на состав, то это гастролёры. Раньше были интеграторы, а теперь теперь пришли дезинтеграторы и приспособленцы», — размышляет Липсиц.

The investigation by the Syrian transition government into the March violence against the Alawites in Latakia province has been submitted—but the full findings have not been made public, and it apparently exonerates the government of involvement. Meanwhile southern Suwayda province has seen a perhaps even deadlier eruption of violence—this time pitting Druze against Bedouin, with the role of the government similarly the source of much contestation (and fodder for Internet partisans). And a Damascus protest against the violence and for co-existence was attacked by goons. Amid all this, Israel is militarily intervening, the government looks to Turkey for military aid, and both the US and Russia still have forces on the ground—treating the country as a Great Power chessboard. Until fairly recently the government of Malawi were blissfully unaware of the fact that they inadvertently stumbled into a tense political stand-off between Nato and Russia.

Ministers in the landlocked capital Lilongwe were understandably surprised to find that they had been enthusiastically registering sanctioned shadow fleet tankers and fixing them up with new identities.

They were, initially at least, perplexed by questions regarding a fleet of tankers being used to load crude out of the Baltic, then escorted by Russian naval ships and tracked by the combined surveillance capacity of NATO’s forces.

And that’s because they had no idea until Lloyd’s List told them.

In this special two-part podcast, Lloyd’s List editor-in-chief Richard Meade explains how the system of ship registration has corrupted to the point that governments are unable to tell the difference between real and fake ship identities; and looks at what it will take to fix that broken system.
