In Sanskrit language, Azaya has many different meanings symbolizing various connotations, for example: point, will, thought, intention, meaning, property, fortune, fate, soul and etc.
The structure of Azaya is based on a textile weave, which was mapped from the predator drone engine.
The piece develops from the bumblebee sounds, followed by low rumbling sounds, which transform into longer and deeper glissando. Throughout the piece, dynamics grows from ppp to ff until motives weave into monolith soundscape. At the same
time, harmony and tonal range expands developing into tutti of frightening buzzing noise.
The work was commissioned by the Lithuanian contemporary music festival Muzikos Ruduo and Lithuanian Composers’ Union. The piece was premiered by saxophone quartet Quasar (Soprano saxophone – Marie-Chantal Leclair, Alto saxophone – Mathieu Leclair, Tenor Saxophone André Leroux, Barytone saxophone – Jean-Marc Bouchard) on 9 October, at Energy and Technology Museum, in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2024.

The Long Goodbye

‘Hexagonal’ was written for saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone). The piece
takes a playful approach to working with various patterns of six, inspired by some of the most
common and beautiful patterns found in nature. The beehive, and the snowflake, for example,
and of course many flowers and leaves are all based on the hexagon shape. Transposing some of these visual ideas into musical phrases, and exploring some of the colour and textural variations in musical language, this piece is very much about enjoying the simplest pleasures that the natural world has to offer.

'Hexagonal' received its premiere (as an acoustic work) with the Cobalt Saxophone Quartet, at
the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, New York, NY, USA, on November 16th, 2024.  The electroacoustic backing track was created in spring 2025.  The track takes its material from only two sound sources: a commuter train, along with some springtime birdsong— an interesting blend of the urban and natural elements of the soundscape in Vancouver, Canada.

Spacious Skies (Sax Quartet with Band) - Bruce Broughton [excerpt]

Vertigo. Limbo and borderland. The feeling of not knowing where you are or what is what. This work builds on musical ideas from my saxophone quartet "Kostymen sys i det tysta” from 2022, in which the two playing techniques embouchure-glissando and multiphonics create soundscapes where the sounds go in and out of each other so that in the end you don't know who is playing what. Now, the organ is also added to the soundscape, with its multifaceted sound palette and its ability to fill the entire church interior with its tones. In this way, a feeling is created that the music comes from everywhere and nowhere, something that is also reinforced by the fact that the saxophonists begin to move around the church room during the second half of the piece. “Vertigo” is also a journey between different energy levels and emotional states, where the violent and chaotic transitions into the eerie and mysterious or the pensive and calm.

The recording is from the world premiere in Gothenburg Cathedral on October 19th 2025.

Inspired by the phrase " The Light at the End of the tunnel," this piece symbolizes hope and promise of relief after difficulty times. Throughout life, we all face hardships and struggles, whether it is personal problems or with mental health.

Meaning: no matter how dark the journey may seems, we must continue moving forward and strive to the Light at the End.

Paul has performed with many of the country’s top orchestras including RPO, RLPO and WNO and studio work includes various cast albums and exam syllabi but career wise, by successfully adding saxophones and flutes to his porBolio, Paul has become one of the most versatile woodwind players in the West End.

Paul’s current post is playing the Reed 3 - Clarinet, E flat, Bass Clarinet and Soprano Sax) on the West End production of Wicked, a post he has held since the show opened in 2006.

As an educator, with several publicaCons to his name from CliPon Edition and Forton Music, Paul has established himself as one of the UK’s leading figuresin woodwind multi-instrumental studies. He has been the multi-instrumental consultant at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for around a decade and is pleased to offer woodwind doubling consultant days to any interested music departments of universities and Conservatoires. 

From woodwind teaching posts to the current demands expected from professional woodwind doublers in the West End, Paul remains keen to be a part of training the next generation and give them the best chance possible of gaining employment.

Charity work includes being a Mental Health First Aider and an award winning professional mentor for Birmingham University.

Finally, Paul is an experienced Orchestral Manager and continues to offer these services. 

Previous clients include the London Musical Theatre Orchestra, Refugee Orchestra Project and The Central School of Speech and Drama.

Each composition is based on the transformation of the various textile patterns or weaves into musical language. The methodology of mapping is concluded in PhD thesis at Durham University.  Textile patterns reflects distinct motions and atmosphere due its different structure and description. Indian ragas serves for the structure of harmony in order to construct a close relationship between sounds and textile patterns. Every Indian ragas has its own time, duration, specific mode of pitches as the textile patterns, which reflect various cultures and weaving methods.
