Another RIP from a track I made in 1995. This one is: 529K (528,384 bytes). The RAM on the card had 1MB of available RAM, but there were limitations due to the software used (ScreamTracker 3.21).

The original melody sample was from the song "Missing" by Everything But the Girl.

As I normally do -- this was a test to see what sounds good through the Gravis and what doesn't... YOU DECIDE

Many of the samples are my own (Yamaha DX-100) -- the "DONKS"

Module Mix: Electro-nique (2016)

"Point of Departure" was originally released as a ScreamTracker file in 1995. It was composed by Andrew Sega (aka Necros) - https://soundcloud.com/andrew-sega

I loved this track from the moment I heard it and have thought about covering it for a while, but never thought I could do it justice or figure out everything that was going on in the complex layers of samples and loops.

However, I was inspired after watching a breakdown by 'Beej Tunes' to try and recreate it at last with more modern tools. What Necros was able to accomplish in 15 hours with just 16 channels of 8-bit sounds took me 36+ tracks and several late nights to remake in Reason Studios 12 with mostly stock instruments, samples, and effects.

Basically, I just soloed each channel of the original .s3m file in OpenMPT, listening to the parts one pattern at a time, and attempted to create a similar sound to the original using a much more powerful DAW than existed 30 years ago. I added a sonic embellishment or two of my own, but mainly I tried to stick to the source.

Point Of Departure (Remake)

This track was created by me and my ex-wife Mary U in Scream Tracker V2.2 for DOS in May 1997 using yaki_da.stm module from Ruslan Aliev as a base where we kept drums and arrangement line, but composed our own lead and bass. STM-file was converted to 16-bit stereo WAV by modplug123 utility and then compressed to 256-kbit MP3 for SoundCloud by Audacity.

My cover of "Alberto Balsalm" (originally by Aphex Twin from his 1995 album "...I Care Because You Do"), written & produced by myself back in 1998 during the pre-internet days of BBSs, using FastTracker 2 and my own sample set—trying to capture the spirit and texture of the original track.

It was released by Tokyo Dawn Records (TDR), which at the time was a pioneering internet-only label known for its forward-thinking electronic and drum & bass releases. TDR has since evolved into something different, but back in the late '90s and early 2000s, they were a key part of the online tracker music scene.

The original .XM file has been preserved thanks to the great folks at The Mod Archive. You can download and inspect it here:

I've been a hobbyist DJ / Electronic musician for the past thirty years.  I have always had a thirst for complex symmetry in electronic music and love the "big sound" one can make using gear and live effects (it's not good unless it's LIVE AND TWEAKY).

I've learned to DJ and scratch on real turntables as well as digital ones (I prefer the authenticity of wax over digital any day) and have also mastered the art of non-linear mix-making.

I am currently sitting on mostly digital gear, chief amongst those: Pioneer CDJ-400, Korg PadKONTROL, MicroKORG, M-Audio's X-Session Pro and Axiom 49.  Live kit includes Stanton CD decks and plenty of gnarly effect processing.

I am currently working on releasing original mixsets as well as my own tracks.
