En octobre dernier sortait "SpaceBoy", premier long métrage d'Olivier Pairoux, petit OVNI dans le paysage cinématographique belge tant par sa forme, un film d'aventures vif et rétro, nourri de références eighties, que par ses ambitions, viser un public familial de 7 à 77 ans.
Après de longues années passées à barouder à la télé, Olivier Pairoux semble bien décidé à s'engager à fond dans l'aventure cinéma, et se confie pour "Les Rituels" sur son rapport passionné à l'écriture.

I've Been Teaching Writing For 25 Years... Avoid These Mistakes - Matthew Kalil

"C'est toujours empirique, j'essaye, je fais, et je vois ce que ça donne." 
A l'origine, il y a le jeu. A 18 ans, Lucas Belvaux débarque à Paris pour devenir comédien. Yves Boisset lui confie le premier rôle de son film, "Allons z'enfants", et durant toutes les années 80, Lucas Belvaux enchaîne les rôles. Mais en 1993, il écrit et réalise son premier long métrage, "Parfois trop d'amour", avant d'enchaîner en 1996 avec "Pour rire", qui réunit Jean-Pierre Léaud et Ornella Mutti, et sera présenté à Cannes à l'ACID. IL a aujourd'hui à son actif 12 longs métrages, une poignée de téléfilms, et un premier roman, "Les Tourmentés", qu'il vient d'adapter pour le grand écran.
Avec Lucas Belvaux, on a parlé d'apprendre en faisant, de discipline et d'inspiration, de roman et de scénario, d'adaptations littéraires, forcément, mais aussi d'éviter les plans et de se laisser surprendre par les personnages.

"J’écris d’abord chacun de mes personnages, ensuite, je cherche leurs interactions."

A l’origine, il y a la télé et sa chaîne unique, où ne passe que le Coran, le Roi et Dallas, et puis le ciné-club du cinéma Empire, à Meknès. Jawad Rhalib veut questionner le monde, alors il fait d’abord des études de journalisme, avant de se lancer dans le documentaire. A l’image de l’un de ses modèles, Ken Loach, il rêve d’un cinéma de réel, qu’il soit de documentaire ou de fiction.
Ses films voyagent dans le monde entier, il remporte deux fois le Prix du Meilleur documentaire au Festival du Film Panafricain de Ouagadougou pour "El Ejido la loi du profit" et "Au temps où les Arabes dansaient", et en 2023, il sort un long métrage de fiction, "Amal", qui vaut à Lubna Azabal le Magritte de la Meilleure actrice. 

Avec Jawad Rhalib, on a parlé de fiction et de documentaire bien sûr, mais aussi des échecs, des idées qui vous réveillent la nuit, de sa formation journalistique, et des questions, toutes ces questions qu’il a envie de se poser et de nous poser avec son cinéma.

Rendez-vous aujourd’hui dans Les Rituels avec le cinéaste Laurent Micheli. Avec  "Even Lovers Get the Blues", son premier long métrage, il dressait le portrait amoureux et sexuel d’une jeunesse désabusée mais passionnée, dans une sorte de geste pop et moderne. 
Avec "Lola vers la mer", sorti il y a un an, il dresse un nouveau portrait, celui d'une jeune fille transgenre qui va devoir se réconcilier avec les fantômes du passé pour faire la paix avec son père, et avec elle-même. Alors qu’il change à nouveau de style aujourd’hui, et travaille sur une adaptation littéraire, il se confie pour nous sur son rapport à l’écriture.

« Franchement? Je n’ai pas le choix, c’est comme une possession… »
Ecrire et faire des films. Rendez-vous aujourd’hui dans Les Rituels avec le cinéaste belge Olivier Masset-Depasse (« Cages », « Illégal », « Duelles »). 
Il y a un an, son dernier film, « Duelles », thriller psychologique à l’esthétique sixties, une adaptation complètement recontextualisée du polar à succès de Barbara Abel, « Derrière la haine », remportait pas moins de 9 Magritte du cinéma. 
Aujourd’hui, le réalisateur planche sur le remake du film, qu’il tournera aux Etats-Unis avec Anne Hathaway et Jessica Chastain, elle-même productrice du film.
Il se confie pour nous sur son rapport - hyperactif - à l’écriture…
