An unhappy refugee farmer digs in his garden. Soon, he hits with his hoe plastic wastes disposed off on his garden. He pauses digging and is left fuming at those who dispose off plastics waste inappropriately. He testifies how plastic wastes often blocks his crops from germinating and trees from growing well. 

A climate expert backs his claim warning that unnecessary disposal of plastic wastes pollutes the soil through release of toxic substances besides blocking plant roots from penetrating deep into the soil. The expert then calls on community members to recycle and reuse plastic wastes to keep the environment clean, safe and fertile to grow crops and trees, aimed at turning Imvepi refugee settlement, green.

Wadala, a refugee man faces serious fuel shortage for cooking in his family. He decides to go early at dawn to cut trees as firewood, just outside Imvepi refugee settlement. 

A refugee woman Ms. Awate wakes up from sleep and hears a sound of axe in the nearby forest. She decides to find out. Upon arrival, she notices that her immediate neighbor Mr. Wadala, is cutting down a big tree to get firewood and burn into charcoal as fuel for his family. Ms. Awate advises Wadala to not cut down big trees but that he should focus on small branches if he is badly off.

A climate expert warns community members against cutting down big trees, stressing that big trees attracts rainfall, protects the environment from strong winds, prevents drought, and regulates greenhouse gases.

No big tree cutting - Bari - rfb

On his way to the garden, Pilili, a refugee man meets one of his best friends, Davisco, who’s also heading to cut down a painted tree in the forest that his community has long preserved it. Pilili advises Davisco not to tamper with the painted tree. But defiant Davisco, goes ahead to try felling it despite his friends repeated warnings.

As Davisco cuts the painted tree, a local emerges at a distance and starts shouting at him. While chasing Davisco, he misses him with an arrow. Davisco screams and runs away for Pilili’s help. Under intense fear, he narrates how he survived being arrowed in the event of cutting the painted tree.

An environmental expert warns community members against cutting down painted trees and urges them to uphold local environmental and forest management instructions. He goes on to emphasize that trees attracts rainfall, protects the environment from strong winds, prevents drought, and regulates greenhouse gases.

No painted tree cutting - Bari - rfb

A refugee man visits her neighbor. As he arrives her home, he first hears only chicken clucking and wonders whether he will find mama Konyu or not. 

The man starts to call her aloud. While singing at the backyard, Mama Konyi sweeps goat dung. Upon hearing her neighbor’s voice, she stops sweeping and responds to him. 

The man asks what she wants to do with them. Disappointedly in her tone, Mama Konyu replies that the goat dung smells a lot and so she wants to sweep and burn them. The man interjects and explains to her the easiest steps she can follow to turn goat, cattle or poultry waste plus that of plant residues into a rich manure. He says once the component decomposes in a pit, Mama Konyu can spread them in her garden to improve the garden's soil fertility. The man testifies reaping huge benefits from using animal wastes as manure.

An agricultural expert discourages the community from burning and misuse of animal wastes, adding that dung from goats, cattle or chicken wastes improve soil fertility and provide crops with rich nutrients for suitable growth. He tells refugees and locals that spreading animal wastes on their crops or the trees they planted will lead to better yields and eventually, a green refugee settlement.

No burning animal waste - Bari - rfb

A hungry man wakes up from a day nap in anticipation that his wife will bring him lunch food. As his hunger deepens, he loses patience. He jumps off the bed and approaches his wife at the kitchen.

When he opens the kitchen door, he angrily asks his wife for food.  However, his frustrated wife tells him there is no food yet because people are being chased back from the forest over firewood gathering. Before she completes explaining her statement, her husband slaps her, and starts beating her up. 

A neighbor hears her loud cry and runs in to help. He separates the couples and explains to them about the new concept of making briquettes from plant residences as a cheap, convenient and safe cooking fuel they can make from home.

An environmental expert then warns refugee men and women against fighting over fuel for cooking, explaining that women and men should work together to make briquettes as fuel for cooking. He says briquettes can be made faster, burns for long, produces enough heat, and cooks clean and faster, leading to low demand for firewood and a green refugee settlement.

A man whistles as he walks to his garden at mid-morning. He finds her neighbor, Ms. Akulia, removing and making heaps of dried plant wastes. 

The man greets Akulia and then asks her why she is heaping the dried plant residues. Akulia replies, saying she wants to burn them before planting crops. The man interrupts her, telling her by burning the plant residues she degrades the soil fertility, deprives it of useful organic nutrition, and pollutes the air and worsens the harsh climatic changes. 

An agricultural expert warns community members against burning plant residues, stressing that plant residues are organic manure to the soil, provide heavy mulches to crops and trees by preventing excessive heat from stunting growth while retaining water for long period. This he says moves the community to a fertile land with green refugee settlement.
