This episode of Girls On Film is dedicated to BAFTA-nominated drama Blue Jean, which is set in 1980s Newcastle, at a time when Thatcher’s government was making life very difficult for gay people in the UK. The law ‘Section 28’ forbade “the teaching in schools of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”. Rosy McEwen puts in a terrific performance as teacher Jean, who has to keep her sexuality a secret, and is put in a difficult position when she meets a pupil of hers in a lesbian bar. 
Anna Smith talks with writer-director Georgia Oakley and producer Hélène Sifre, as well as with lead actor Rosy McEwen and Kerrie Hayes, who plays Jean's girlfriend Viv.

With over 20 years experience in the fashion textiles industry Chris has a really varied and interesting career path. His journey starts from a really dark and troublesome place: at school during Section 28. 

Chris hasn't done many interviews and I feel privileged he was trusting enough to come on the podcast and share his journey. When I set up the podcast I wanted to share as many amazing creative stories as possible. The good times and the bad. Although it's definitely more difficult to talk about those dark and difficult times it can be so valuable to others so realise they are not alone and they can learn from the experiences of others. 

Chris' creative journey was sparked by an art teacher allowing him to write an essay on punk culture. This was the catalyst to exploring and understanding a whole new world. From his first drink in a gay bar to interning at Vogue, working in PR for multinational brands and then setting out as a freelancer. Chris has this amazing energy where he wants to make things happen and bring people with him along the way.

Welcome to 'Section 28 and Me' - The Podcast!
To accompany new show 'A show of shows' this podcast will take you through some of the process, connecting research, and interviews with queer communities, gathered by artist Tom Marshman for making of this new show on Section 28. 

Sections 28 or Clause 28 was the legislative that prohibited the "promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities, including schools, Introduced by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government, and in effect from 1988 to 2003.

Dr Peter Dunn is a senior lecturer at the Law school of the University of Bristol. Researcher in LGBTQ+ rights, and how the law can create the identities of LGBTQ+ people, how it acts as a barrier, and how the law can create positive change for the lives of LGBTQ+ people, for example how can the law accommodate issues of gender diversity.

This podcast includes the voices of tea party guests in Bristol, Gloucester, Peterborough and Weston Super Mare. These tea parties invited the local LGBTQ+ community to come and share their Section 28 story.

During LGBTQ history month artist Tom Marshman worked with 4 local queer communities, 4 venues and 4 performance practitioners to explore section 28 and its lasting impact across Wales. He hosted community gatherings through tea parties gathering personal stories and reflections on section 28. Tea parties were hosted at Pontio, Bangor, Sherman Theatre, Cardiff, partnering with National Theatre Wales, Aberration at Aberystwyth Arts Centre and The Torch, Millford Haven. Each tea party was attended by a guest artist, either Welsh or living in Wales, who were commissioned to make a micro-performance for the tea party. This podcast reflects on this process, and includes audio versions of the pieces commissioned.
