Caroline Flack was a celebrated British television presenter, best known for hosting shows like Love Island and The X Factor. Beneath the bright lights and public adoration, however, lay a woman grappling with the weight of constant scrutiny. Her life was marked by both the glamour of celebrity and a deep vulnerability that was all too exposed when her private struggles became public spectacle.

In December 2019, allegations arose that she had assaulted her boyfriend, Lewis Burton—an accusation that he himself did not support. Despite this, the Crown Prosecution Service chose to press ahead with a prosecution. For many, this decision seemed perplexing: here was a celebrity who, by all accounts, posed no danger to anyone, yet was treated as if she were an outlier whose assertiveness deviated from the expected norm of a caring, meek woman. This perception played into broader societal narratives that harshly judge women who do not conform to traditional stereotypes. The relentless pursuit of the case not only magnified public scrutiny but also opened the floodgates for intense media and social media abuse, with every headline and comment adding to the pressure on her fragile mental state. At her inquest, the coroner cited the fear of prosecution and the impending media onslaught as significant contributors to her decision to take her own life in February 2020.

In the early 1980s, when Erna Walraven decided to follow her dreams and become one of the first female zookeepers in Australia, she thought her biggest challenges would be feeding big cats and subduing irate gorillas. In fact, it was her male colleagues who made work miserable, harassing and humiliating her for doing a 'man's job'. So, she looked to the animals under her care to prove them wrong.

Despite what Erna's colleagues seemed to think, the females of the animal world were far from weak and demure. Elephant matriarchs led their herds; female bonobos revelled in sexual exploration; emu mothers abandoned their chicks to the care of their fathers. Her colleagues wouldn't dare tell a female tiger that hunting was a 'male's job' - why were they so intent on limiting Erna? 

In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Erna Walraven about the sexist, male-dominated culture that greeted her when she first started working as a zoo-keeper at Taronga Zoo in 1983, the wonders of the animal world and what animals taught her about feminism, and how the culture of zoo-keeping has changed for the better.
