This track is part of a collection of recordings that documented all the ferry boat crossings in Shanghai in 2021. The recordings were used in the Vital performance showcase in Shanghai at the Rockbund Museum in November 2021.

Documenting the ferry lines in Shanghai was on my wish list for a long time and I was happy that I finally had a reason to do it. Over the span of one month, I went to the 16 ferry ports and made a round trip. I documented the areas around the ports and other interesting sounds that I heard.

I used the recordings and recorded it onto reels of tape with my Generations instrument consisting of 4 Revox A77 tape recorders. Before the performance, I spliced and re-recorded the audio over several days to create interesting, pre-recorded reels to play during the concert. During the performance, I manipulated the reels with my fingers while controlling the recorders via MIDI to make a sound collage of the Shanghai ferry.

The final track in this collection is the live recording of my improvised performance at the Vital concert.

This was the final composition during the performance. After several weeks of making 'prepared' reels to perform, I finally showcased the instrument for the first time. 

The entire 'performance' improvised even the preparing of the reels. I recorded some of the recordings on reels then improvised re-recording them on other reels. I also spliced and re-spliced the reels many times during this process. This led to many interesting reverse sounds and short cuts.

Ma Haiping stands as one of China’s most influential electronic and independent musicians, a trailblazer who has carved out a distinct space in the global Techno scene. His music is a seamless fusion of Detroit Techno traditions with Sci-Fi-infused, hypnotic soundscapes, crafting deeply immersive and futuristic tracks that captivate both dance floors and deep listeners alike.
A defining moment in Ma Haiping’s career came when his album Chang’e-4 was released on the legendary Axis Records, founded by Techno visionary Jeff Mills. Mills himself lauded the album, recognizing Ma Haiping’s ability to push sonic boundaries while staying true to the genre’s roots. This release not only marked a significant milestone for Ma Haiping but also placed him among a select group of artists who have contributed to one of the most respected Techno labels in history.
His impact on the global scene, however, was already in motion years before. In 2013, Ma Haiping made history as the first Chinese producer to release Techno in Detroit—the birthplace of the genre—with his EP The Chinese Connection on Scan 7’s Cratesaves International label. This breakthrough symbolized a cultural bridge between the East and West in Techno, highlighting his deep respect for the genre’s origins while adding his own innovative perspective.
Continuing his journey, 2015 saw the release of Crepuscular Rays on Orlando Voorn’s Nightvision label, further establishing his reputation as a producer with a keen ear for atmospheric and driving Techno. In recent years, between 2022 and 2024, Ma Haiping continued to build an impressive discography, releasing EPs such as XX 8, Collapse, Parallel Cycle, Invincible EP, and Artificial Ecstatic. These works found homes on prestigious international labels, including the UK’s Molecular Recordings, France’s Seclusion, and the USA’s Sythetik Sound, further cementing his status as a global force in the underground Techno movement.
His music has consistently garnered attention from major industry platforms. Beatport has regularly featured his tracks as some of the best Techno (Raw/Deep/Hypnotic) releases of the month, recognizing his ability to craft intricate, powerful compositions that resonate with both DJs and listeners. Esteemed media outlets such as Groove Mag, Mixmag (UK and Asia editions), and 5 Magazine have also highlighted his work, praising his ability to blend rhythmic intensity with atmospheric depth.
Beyond critical acclaim, Ma Haiping’s music has earned the respect of some of the biggest names in the industry. His tracks are frequently played by top international DJs, including Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Slam, Ben Sims, Ken Ishii, DVS1, Rødhåd, Kr!z, and Rene Wise. Their support has helped introduce his sound to dance floors across the world, reinforcing his influence in the ever-evolving Techno landscape.
With each release, Ma Haiping continues to refine his sonic identity, pushing the boundaries of Techno while maintaining a deep connection to its roots. His music is a journey—one that bridges the past, present, and future of the genre. As he forges ahead, he remains not just a producer but a visionary artist shaping the sound of tomorrow.
