This is a new, 7-station audio walk of a portion of Schneider Creek in Kitchener Ontario, Canada. This work is a collaboration between Multidisciplinary artist Sydney Lancaster & Writer Geoff Martin. Both are part of The Creek Collective (https://thecreekcollective.com/). The audio walk is being presented as part of the OPEN EARS Festival of Music and Sound (https://openears.ca/festival/2024-schedule/)

This is the first part of a cycle that Adrian Mocanu - this year a fellow of the „Weltoffenes Berlin“ programme and composer-in-residence of the Maulwerker - is writing for the ensemble. The title „madrigali guerrieri“ (madrigals of war) refers to the title of Claudio Monteverdi's eighth book of madrigals, „Madrigali guerrieri, et amorosi“ (madrigals of war and love). Based on the general idea of the madrigal as a medieval vocal genre, Mocanu deconstructs it tonally and filters it through his own perception of wartime in Ukraine.

Generative sound, light & motion sensors

Synopsis:
Commissioned as a site-responsive piece, I used light and motion sensors to create a meditative environment in dialogue with Isamu Noguchi’s metal sculptures that ground this beautiful space. The sound expresses the arc of natural light throughout the day, undulating and morphing according to shifting moods and atmospheres within the room as well as the changes out there on the water along Victoria harbour.

This work was commissioned by M+ Hong Kong for the ongoing exhibition "Shanshui: Echoes and Signals".

What does a building sound like? 

A (somewhat literal, somewhat naive) exercise in translating architectural qualities into sound. 

Inspired by Graham Harman's object-oriented philosophy and featuring houses and their fellow objects on Architektų g. 67, 112, Vilnius, Lithuania.

Echoes of Ladakh - sā ladakh landart-festival in Leh, India – 2024
Site-specific sound-installation, conceived for the highest landart-festival 'sā ladakh'
Echoes of Ladakh is a site-specific sound-installation, conceived for the highest landart-festival Festival (sā ladakh) in Asia. It deals with the subject of Acoustic Ecology within Disko Valley, Leh and its surrounding landscape and gives 'sā' a voice, makes audible what normally can't be heard. It's conceptualised as an ongoing project at the festival which starts with an empty space and will be filled up from day to day with new sounds that are recorded in the landscape and with people living or working in Leh. An automated application is randomly mixing theses sounds into each other so that every time you enter the space it becomes a unique experience. Ramon's motivation for this installation was to work with the invisible dimension of this landscape and to make its ephemeral quality tangible through the change of perspective.

Attached to the Installation there was also a performance evening at the Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO) where Ramon took the festival visitors on a journey into an unknown dimensions - a sound performance with self-recorded sound pearls from all over the world - woven live into a soundscape-composition, accompanied here and there by his voice with hints and connections between the sounds. The second part of the performance was accompanied by the wonderful performance of Mukulita Ganguly.

Part of Art Licks weekender 2018, residents of a modernist housing estate in South East London were invited to contribute to a publication and exhibition within the building. My contribution consisted of manipulated recordings made within the surroundings of the block; contact mic recordings of heavy winds on the netting and local wildlife, such as foxes. The piece was then played back within the escape balcony and communal areas for the duration of the weekend.

LOW RISE (2018)

Silent Spring is an outdoor sound installation that transmits the vanishing songs of Estonia’s endangered birds via a custom FM network and second-hand radios placed in trees. These scattered devices—powered by solar energy and hidden in bird boxes—emit a haunting soundscape of fractured calls and static interference. As the radios age and decay, they mirror the fading voices of nature itself, urging listeners to confront the ecological silence settling over our landscapes.

Tom White is a London-based artist. His multidisciplinary practice spreads across sound, moving image, installation and live performance. Past projects include commissions and appearances for Radiophrenia, Glasgow (CCA); BRAUBLFF (KRAAK & De Player); Whitechapel Gallery, London & Colour out of Space Festival, Brighton. Collaborators include Maya Dunietz, Kieron Piercy, Ben Knight, Stuart Chalmers and most recently in Al Fresco with Lia Mazzari & Sholto Dobie .

He won the British Composer Award in 2014 (Sonic Art) for Public Address, commissioned by South London Gallery. In 2016 he founded Apologies in Advance; a platform for artists presenting work in progress performances.

Adrian Mocanu is a composer working in the field of contemporary classical music. He studied at the National Music Academy of Ukraine and at Centro Superior de Enseñanza Musical Katarina Gurska in Madrid. He has been awarded at such competitions as the 38th Frederic Mompou International Award (Barcelona, 2017), 5th Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition (Vienna, 2022) or XXXIII Young Composers Prize by the SGAE Foundation (Madrid, 2022).
He was the composer-in-residence of JM Spain for the 23/24 season and was granted the Weltoffenes Berlin Fellowship from the Senate of Berlin. Among the residencies he carried out were scholarships of Casa de Velázquez - the Academy of France in Madrid, The Green Room for Performing Artist (Cologne), otte1 (Eckernförde),“Odyssée” program from the Ministry of Culture of France, “Gaude Polonia” from the Ministry of Culture of Poland and “Postcolonial Recherche” from Goethe-Institut.
His works, spanning chamber, vocal, orchestral and electroacoustic music, have been premiered across Europe and North America in collaborations with Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble Recherche, Maulwerker, IEMA-Ensemble, Ensemble Mosaik, PinkNoise Ensemble, Bilbao Sinfonietta, Würzburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Armonia Ludus.
