Regarded as the father of contemporary haiku, Masaoka Shiki was a poet and literary critic during the Meiji period Japan.

He advocated realistic observation by “sketching” (shasei) poems and going out into nature with notebooks, thus abandoning the traditional subjects of haiku of the time. His advice for an aspiring poet was, “Use both imaginary pictures and real ones, but prefer the real ones.”

About Christina Wald
Christina specializes in illustration, toy and giftware design, and product design. She has illustrated over 60 children's books and done artwork for many other books, magazines, packaging, and products. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Industrial Design and runs Cincinnati's weekly Illustrators Lunch and is part of the team that manages Urban Sketchers Cincinnati. She also teaches illustration at Northern Kentucky University. Her obsessions include travel, reading, comics, audiobooks, movies, good TV, stand-up comedy, musicals, game nights, design, animation, urban sketching, sketching, and weird history.

In 1605, Father Henry Garnet, a Jesuit priest, was the head of the Jesuit mission in England. He became implicated in the Gunpowder Plot, a failed assassination attempt on King James I and Parliament. Though not an active plotter, Garnet learned of the plot through confession from another Jesuit, Father Oswald Tesimond, who had learned it from conspirator Robert Catesby. Despite knowing the plot, Garnet did not disclose the information to authorities, citing religious grounds of the seal of confession. He was later arrested, tried for treason, and executed in 1606.
