One of my favorite methods for creating music by myself is to record to a click (in Ableton Live) starting with one instrument. The first instrument I play a continuous improvisation for a set period of time and this becomes the arrangement for the song (i try to do no edits or note-repair to the 1st instrument).  
Then I start layering.

Slow funk, slow disco, dub disco and hot edits with an immersion in different musical eras from  New Orlean jazz and the era of flower children to the cold romance of new wave and  dub edits fused into one hour-long story.
