'Thleep 41' is a 41-minute audio meditation exploring induced states of relaxation through the gradual but continual slowing down of tempo.

The work begins with gentle resonance of bells and singing bowls (traditional and familiar sonic territory for relaxation and meditation) before introducing a clock-like rhythm that slows down over time.

By minute 6 a gentle purring rhythm underpins a cavernous space, gently punctuated by a heart deep heartbeat-like rhythm (that is also slowing down).

At minute 14 the work takes a very gentle, momentary, upturn in intensity as sounds of warm fire crackling and radio static provide a blanket for a series of rising tonal pulses/waves.

At minute 22 a metallic sound introduces a circular auditory sensation.

By minute 28 all tonal sounds within lower frequency ranges are removed leaving an airy feeling of suspension.

From minute 32 until end disguised voices and sounds of static provide a gentle return to reality, a reminder of a connection to the world of other people.

Aging is a time where the culture tells us that our life has to get smaller because our body is weaker. We're losing capacity.

My finding is exactly the opposite. I'm finding as I age, because I have to slow down, because I want to slow down,  because I need to slow down, those pauses leave a space for me to fill in  what was, in the past, a time simply to rest.

But lately, I'm feeling that the pause is allowing me to take the time to consider what do I want to create? Where is my heart leading me?

Is it a meal I want to create? Is it a conversation? Is it a collage?

What am I moved to embody as a creative act in these days that challenge my old assumptions.

It challenges my idea that being busy is productive. What if being productive looks like slowing down? Listening to what my heart wants to create.

What does it look like to breathe in to a moment and invite my imagination to lead the way and not my productivity?

I'm interested in an invitation that leads me to greater awareness of what I choose to create in every day.

What if my mindfulness can open the door to a different  way of finding meaning?

Perhaps meaning comes from allowing the muse to make sense of this time of life.

THLEEP — is a sound and light art performance; combined as a synaesthesia to reduce anxiety and promote healthier sleep cycles. 

We explore controlled sound and light interventions that lead towards restful sleep, resulting in improved mental health – especially during winter months.

Between 2019 and 2022 we created multiple long-format (45-90 minute) audio-visual public performances, taking place initially online, and then at venues and open-air festivals in London.

Our participating artists offer some of the best in contemporary sound and light art, all working to explore passive meditations to calm the mind and restore equilibrium. 

Since 2022, production has been moving towards developing a sound library of shorter audio interventions called 'haikoustics'(distributed here on this site) as a way of providing shorter bursts of hyper-focussed stillness and escape amidst a continually moving day-to-day world.

THLEEP is by no means a scientific symposium, we are artists interested in exploring the context of our work and the potential for scientific synergy. 

Presented by ‘Soul Fiction’ (Artist led events) these performances and recordings of light and sound explore the compounding relationship of art, science and community; an anxiolytic to calm the nerves and combat the stresses of day-to-day life with people set to invest in their better health.
