Episode 1: Estado y Guerra

UC Irvine will launch its new pre-health program with support from a three and a half million dollar grant from the state of California. “So, these programs are meant to diversify California’s medical schools and to train physicians who receive specialized training in working with California’s most medically underserved communities.” Belinda Campos, professor and chair of Chicano/Latino studies and a faculty member in the program in medical education for the Latino community. “What we propose to do is to build cohorts that make sure that nobody is flailing about trying to figure out this information by themselves.” Now that the grant funding is secure, the program is expected to launch this summer. The goal is to diversify California’s medical schools. Belinda Campos, professor and chair of Chicano/Latino Studies: “The more we have people from many different experiences who approach problems of health with different lenses and in different ways that I think are really important for creative problem solving. We don’t want medical school classes filled with people who all think the same way and approach problems in the same way. I think that limits the creativity and the innovation and the future problem solving – in terms of health – that can happen.” Campos says when students from underserved communities become physicians, many times they go back to serving those communities. Dean of UCI's School of Social Sciences for the past decade, anthropology professor Bill Maurer recently agreed to five more years at the helm of the school with the largest percentage of undergraduates majoring in their departments. 

In this UCI Podcast, Maurer describes how he morphed from reluctant leader to a third term as dean, reflects on his first decade in the role and looks ahead to what’s next as the School of Social Sciences continues its mission to “create positive change and improve the human condition.” Maurer also shares why he was drawn to anthropology and offers a quick Cryptocurrency 101 lesson, including the potential benefits and drawbacks of digital currency.

UCI Podcast: What's next in the School of Social Sciences?

Stephanie Veldman and Arjan van Dijk of Brill Publishing reveal the economic mechanisms and strategic thinking behind their work in open access. A 340-year-old publishing house with strong credentials in the Humanities and Social Sciences in particular, it publishes some 1,400 academic books and more than 300 peer-reviewed journals annually. About 10% of its books are published in open access and 10% of its journals operate according to the Diamond Open Access model. Brill is working to see these figures rise.

On Wednesday, 7 June, the 2023 Holberg Prize Laureate Joan Martinez-Alier held the lecture: "Land, Water, Air and Freedom" in the University Aula in Bergen. 

Mapping geographies of resistance at the frontiers of commodity extraction and waste disposal in a world counter-movement for environmental justice.

As the industrial economy grows, there is also growth and changes in the Social Metabolism. The economy is not circular, it is entropic. There are thousands of “ecological distribution conflicts” at the frontiers of commodity extractions and waste disposal. Their protagonists display many different valuation languages and repertoires of action. “Land, Water, Air and Freedom” seems a good slogan and also a short description of the aims of the world movements for environmental justice.

Welcome to a new episode, albeit the slight delay! Tune in this October to listen to Elin’s first interview ever! She had the chance to sit down and talk to Jakob Altgärde, infectious diseases physician with experience in hospital work around infections and resistance in both Sweden and Nepal. With him, we learn how an ID physician works day-to-day, and the main differences between Sweden and Nepal when it comes to his work and AMR.

In the news section, we first talk about a recent massive high-throughput screening done for drug combinations on gram positives (Bacillus, Staphylococcus & Streptococcus), and a thought piece by Claas Kirchhelle presenting the idea of the Antibiocene, a new geological era where AMR is the main signal of the phenotypic and genotypic changes that our microbial commons have suffered due to our relationship with antimicrobials. Martinez-Alier is Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB). In this interview, he talks about his academic scholarship and activism.

The 2023 Holberg Conversation with Joan Martinez-Alier

This podcast talks about Córdoba, a special province in the middle of Argentina. It is the cradle of the "cuarteto", the most popular genre of music in the province. The accent and the idioms are also distinctive characteristics of Córdoba. All of this is involved in politics, let's see how!

Córdoba as an island: about "cuarteto" and politics

The practical challenges of surviving harsh environments and limited resources in outer space have long been a focus of space research. But how might asking questions about living differently in space help us meet the challenges of living differently on earth? In this episode, we explore this with Dr Aaron Parkhurst as he discusses his multidisciplinary approach to studying ‘off-world living’. From Martian homes to exercise trampolines and funeral practices, we discuss the benefits of bringing together researchers from anthropology, architecture, art, design, cardiovascular science, molecular biology, psychiatry, and sustainable construction to open thinking about living well and the need, not only to survive, but to thrive. Aaron Parkhurst is an Associate Professor in medical anthropology at UCL. His work combines interests in science and genetics, cyborgs, the body and technology, and immigration, to address the complex challenge of how we might live differently on earth and beyond.
