We continue our women’s health series with a chat with Dr Dorinda ‘t Hart from the School of Population and Global Health at UWA. 

Dorinda has a background in sociology originally, with her PhD focussing on post-abortion narratives of women who had an abortion in Western Australia since 1998 when abortions were fully legalised in the state. 

Dorinda talks us through her PhD research and covers many aspects of the decision-making process that women who choose to proceed with an abortion go through before reaching their final decision. This includes what female bodily autonomy actually means, the relationship between motherhood and abortion, the pre-conditions that many women feel they need to meet to proceed with a pregnancy, and the role that their partners and other family members may play in helping them to reach their final decision.

To finish, Dorinda gives us some key findings that may assist people working with women facing a decision about whether to proceed with, or terminate a pregnancy, and how they may best support them during that process.

Episode 124 - Abortion Decision Making with Dr Dorinda 't Hart [Women's Health Series]

Social movements – and the protests they give rise to – have happened on American soil since before the country’s establishment as an independent nation. On Dec. 16, 1773, American colonists demonstrated their dissatisfaction with British tax policies by dressing in disguise and dumping 342 chests – around 92,000 pounds – of valuable tea into Boston Harbor. Originally known as “the Destruction of the Tea,” the event was later nicknamed “the Boston Tea Party.”

In this century, we’ve seen part of that moniker repurposed by the tea party movement, a group interested in lower taxes and decreased government spending who staged protests in over 750 U.S. cities on April 15, 2009 – Tax Day.

Social injustices, environmental issues and political concerns are just a few of myriad reasons people have organized protests over the course of history. David S. Meyer, UC Irvine professor of sociology, political science, and urban planning and public policy, is one of the nation’s top scholars on social movements. In this episode of The UC Irvine Podcast, Meyer leans on years of study to put today’s realities into historical perspective, analyze the current state of polarization and share what he’s learned about how action can spark change.

	6.	Halte deine Mitte und stärke deinen Fokus – Tiefe statt Dauerpräsenz

In this episode, An Intersectional Lens to Gender Inequality and GBVF, host Mpho Nyamathe reflects on the sociological theory of Intersectionality to dissect gender inequality and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa. 

Guided by the sociological works of Dr. Patricia Hill Collins, Mpho Nyamathe takes a closer look at the intersecting inequalities experienced by Gogo Phetsana, an elderly woman who was waiting for housing, running water and a flushing toilet under the RDP Programme. From the apartheid era, she died without ever having access to these services, thereby living through systemic inequalities. 

The episode encourages listeners to rethink social inequalities so that policies are reflective of people living in South Africa.
