With this song I pray, for myself and all sentient beings, that at all times, good or bad, we will remember that we are not alone, helpless and aimless. For the Buddha, "who is free of all fears, who is skilled in the means of freeing others from fear, who has great, impartial compassion for everyone, and who acts for everyone's welfare regardless of whether or not they have benefitted him" is our friend, our protector and our worthy refuge. May every step we take lead us to faultless happiness for self and others.

Sickness is an inevitable part of cyclic existence. No one is spared from it. It breaks my heart to see so many people and sentient beings around me suffer day in day out due to illnesses. 

That anguish I felt drove me to seek refuge and liberation for myself and those inflicted with illnesses. And in the process of supplicating to the Medicine Buddha, I wrote a melody to the Medicine Buddha mantra. 

TADYATA OM BHEKHANDZYE BHEKHANDZYE MAHA BHEKHANDZYE RAJA SAMUDGATE SVAHA
HOMAGE TO THE MEDICINE BUDDHA!

I pray that whoever hears this mantra, will be free forever from sickness and attain enlightenment!

Below is an excerpt of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s advice for the sick or anyone who wishes to do the Medicine Buddha practice. His discourse moved me deeply and I hope that it can help you develop unshakeable faith in the Medicine Buddha too. May peace with you. 

Advice from Lama Zopa Rinpoche:

The Medicine Buddha stated that even an animal that hears his mantra, will never be reborn in the lower realms. 

So with full trust in the Medicine Buddha, recite the mantra, knowing that Medicine Buddha will completely take care of your life and heal you. With full trust, know how Medicine Buddha is always with you, in your heart, on your crown, in front of you. There is not one second that Medicine Buddha does not see you or have compassion towards you. 

As you listen to the mantra and chant along and pray in your heart: 
“The purpose of my life is to free all beings from suffering and lead them to enlightenment, therefore, I am going to do the Medicine Buddha practice, especially to purify the negative karma, defilements, disease and spirit harm, as well as to do healing, so that I can have a healthy and long life to offer service and actualize the path.”

Dedication the merits from chanting the mantra as follows:
“Due to all the merits of the past, present and future that I have collected and that others have collected, however many sick sentient beings there are may they be instantly liberated from their sicknesses and may sentient beings never get sick.”

Medicine Buddha Mantra

This is a mix of what I'm calling Brazilian devotional music. The vast majority of the country is Catholic, but the Christian faith is often fused with a deep nature awareness. It's hard to generalize a country as large and diverse as Brazil, but certainly the nature here is quite strong and I feel like much of the population is proud of that. The songs on this mix are sung by a sub-culture of people who spend a lot of time in nature and have cultivated a strong sense of connection with the earth. Many of these songs are sung in a mantra like way, like devotional hymns, often singing praises to nature, sometimes specifically evoking a nature spirit, or Orisha, like Yemanja, Oshun, or Nana. These names have come from African religions like Yoruba. A really interesting fusion has come about between African, indigenous, and Christian faith. Brazil is an incredibly diverse place and a rich culture. I hope I was able to convey just a small but special part of it.

This set was recorded on Christmas Day somewhere up a small tributary of the Amazon river in what initially seemed liked the middle of nowhere, but in fact, as I later realized, was actually the center of the entire universe. Much appreciation to Eve and Diogo for bringing many of these healing songs into my life and for inviting me down to the Amazon to visit them this winter

A collection of healing songs of prayer from Latin America, with much inspiration coming from Peru. Of course there's a fusion happening here, with much cultural cross-over between the Andes and Amazonian regions, and influences from beyond, such as Europe and North America. Indigenous music has long incorporated certain instruments from elsewhere like guitars, but now we sometimes even find African drums and Indian sitars. The healing plant medicine traditions of the Amazonian region have become blended with the Andean world view with Pachamama and their mountain deities, melded with Christianity, and now even with influences coming from Eastern Yogic philosophy and mantra style songs of prayer. Most of these songs are being sung in Spanish, with a splash of indigenous languages such as Quechua or Yawanawa.
