““Absent Near Dawn” is based on recordings that happened within one hour before or after daybreak. They are arranged in a chronological sequence of recordings that happened approximately every 4 to 6 weeks between December 2021 and June 2022. All of the recordings retain their original character, pitch, speed and spatial imaging. Multiple recordings are overlapped throughout the piece. The piece was premiered for multichannel concert presentation in April 2023 at the Ear Sound Scape series in Copenhagen and Malmö.

Absent Near Dawn” is part of “The Absent Listener” series of soundscapes pieces, which are all derived from continuous soundscape recordings made on a 14-acre rural residential property in Northern Ontario Canada. The property has mixed forests with a variety of maple, white pine, cedar, spruce, tamarack and birch trees. It borders on a lake, and a creek, and has a mixture of rocky and swampy terrain. It is also 20 KM from a highway. This distance limits the road noise audible in the soundscape to only local vehicle traffic. 

The recordings are made continuously and unsupervised save for battery changes and maintenance visits every two days. This is done so that the presence of the recordist has as little influence as possible on the sound-making of people, animals and insects. Recordings are made with a pair of DPA 4060 lavalier omni-directional microphones mounted in a boundary configuration that are occasionally augmented with an Aquarian Audio hydrophone and/or LOM geophone.

ENG: The Conservation Area at Maplewood Flats is situated within the traditional and unceded territory of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation.
Although the area has been used for intensive industrial activities for many years (which can still be heard in the background of the recording), through the lobbying of various public interest groups, actions were initiated to restore Maplewood Flats back to a somewhat natural state and is now a breeding ground for marsh wrens and many other waterfowl and shorebirds. In 2006, under the Wild Bird Trust stewardship, the Maplewood Flats became the leading breeding colony in British Columbia for the migratory purple martin (progne subis), which we can hear chirping as a group throughout the recording.

Aunque el área se ha utilizado para actividades industriales intensivas durante muchos años (que aún se pueden escuchar en el fondo de la grabación), a través del cabildeo de varios grupos de interés público, se iniciaron acciones para restaurar Maplewood Flats a un estado algo natural y ahora es un caldo de cultivo para reyezuelos de pantano y muchas otras aves acuáticas y playeras. En 2006, bajo la administración de Wild Bird Trust, Maplewood Flats se convirtió en la colonia de reproducción líder en la Columbia Británica para el martin morado migratorio (progne subis), al que podemos escuchar gorjear como grupo a lo largo de la grabación.

This version of: Sudden Daydream, (in)somnia (co)incidental Diversity composed for the ISCM World New Music Days 2024. It is one of the 6 nominated works by Nieuw Geneco, (Dutch Contemporary Composers). Unfortunately not selected for presentation during World Music Days on Faroe Islands in 2024... 

One day, two successive improvisations with percussion and vibraphone suddenly coincide, sliding over each other, reinforcing each other, moving their sounds back and forth, the chance-denying synthesis of melodies and rhythms in dialogue with the environment as a diverse ecological set of layered sounds. A sudden daydream as if sleep overtakes us or doesn't want to catch us anymore... Like an “anthropo(s)cene”, listening attentively to the changing soundscape. A musical wakeup call: the unexpected silent cry from the cymbal for preserving a layered bio diverse sounding ecology for future generations of all living species.

All instruments, sounds played, recorded and produced by the composer.

Across the historical center, audio signals present real good "hifi" quality in the terms of Schafer, allowing to easily characterize soundmarks and interactions through it. 

In the background can be heard the low and powerful sound of cruising ships motors, running without interruption.

Abstracted sounds figures are created through classic micro processing of environmental recorded sounds : granular synthesis and convolution.

"Grabación de campo realizada en un atardecer del miércoles 13 de marzo de 2024, cuando el sol se ocultaba hacia el horizonte en el Río Las Brusquitas, Localidad de Chapadmalal, Buenos Aires - Argentina.  Dicha grabación esta formada por la mezcla de capturas realizadas en diferentes momentos. La sinfonía de la naturaleza se desplegaba con magnificencia mientras el coro del atardecer inundaba el aire, al inicio de la luna creciente y días antes del equinoccio de otoño. 
Se pudo apreciar cada matiz sonoro, desde el suave murmullo del agua del río hasta el canto de las aves. 
En este rincón de Buenos Aires, la coexistencia de especies es un testimonio vivo de la interconexión entre todos los seres vivos. Aquí, los sonidos biofónicos de la fauna silvestre se entrelazan con los sonidos geofónicos del río, el viento que le da movimiento a toda la flora del territorio creando una armonía única y sublime.
La ecología sonora no solo es un campo de investigación en rápida expansión, sino también una herramienta invaluable para comprender y preservar los ecosistemas. Estos sonidos nos ofrecen una ventana hacia la salud de nuestro entorno natural, revelando patrones de comportamiento, migración y reproducción de las especies que lo habitan. Today I visited the beach and noticed subtle movements in the sea wrack along the shoreline. I inserted my soil microphones – crafted by the wonderful David Stalling of Stille & Klang – into the damp clusters of eelgrass and seaweed. Beneath the surface, a hidden world revealed itself through sound: delicate crackles and rustling textures, as tiny creatures carried on with their lives.
A small moment of coastal life, amplified.

Recorded on a Sound Devices MixPre-3 II in 32-bit float.

Darren Copeland is a Canadian sound artist who has been active since 1985 and lives outside the village of South River (Ontario). His work encompasses multichannel spatialization for live performance, fixed media composition, soundscape composition, radio art and sound installations.

His fixed-media compositions have explored both abstract and referential sound materials. Many of these works are released on the empreintes DIGITALes label. His radio art works engage in the associative qualities of environmental sounds in relation to spoken text and have been commissioned and presented by public radio broadcasters in Canada, the US and Europe. His sound installations include gallery and sited works which examine the relationship of sound and place, including Sound Columns (2011) co-created with Andreas Kahre, and Copeland’s installation Expanded Listening (2014).

Darren Copeland founded New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) in 2001. The organization established the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River in January 2017 after operating in Toronto for 16 years. The organization presents year round programming that include installations, radio and multichannel concert presentations, artist talks and workshops.

Copeland’s work with NAISA has included his development of multichannel spatialization systems that began in 1999 with the Richmond Sound Design Audiobox and Third Monk Software’s ABControl, and in 2006, a performance-oriented system using the Polhemus Patriot as a gestural controller along with customized software by Benjamin Thigpen.

Darren Copeland is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre (CMC). He has served on the board of directors for the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology (CASE), the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC), Vancouver Pro Musica, and Rumble Productions. He holds degrees from University of Birmingham (England, UK) and Simon Fraser University (British Columbia, Canada).

Working in mixed media...fieldrecordings, analog soundgenerators homemade "tossekasser" creating soundscapes, a,bi & non tonal pieces with or without instruments. Graduated with a degree in (electric) guitar from the Carl Nielsen Institute in Odense, Denmark in 2000.

Ricardo Huisman is an Amsterdam based soundsculpture / installation artist, soundscape composer, community sound artist and artistic researcher. Inspired by Acoustic Ecology, Music Concrete, J. Cage, Avant-garde, Contemporary (Classical) Music, Sound- and Sense studies.  His installations can be experienced as multi-sensorial tactile interfaces. The “touchsound” produced by his “tactile sonic sculptures” includes composed soundscapes that reveal multiple associative dimensions, bodily sensations that could give rise to new spaces for imagination and playfull knowledge. Huisman invites people to interact within his community sound art projects, to become co-creators of their own “multisensorial hearing perspectives” and response-able and responsible joint owners of the sound habitat.
