Rubik’s Cube II (Evolving)

The journey continues. With this second iteration, the evolving sonic puzzle gains new dimensions—shifting, mutating, and rearranging itself in unpredictable ways. If the first piece teased at resolution, this one bends even further into the unknown, adding fresh layers of complexity and movement.

Pulsar synthesis and granular textures intertwine, creating rhythmic bursts and fragmented tones that flicker like shifting facets of a Rubik’s Cube in motion. Microstructures emerge and dissolve, oscillating between moments of structured form and free-flowing abstraction. Patterns pulse, distort, and realign, hinting at hidden solutions that remain just out of reach.

Each piece in this series stands on its own yet remains tethered to the whole—a growing, morphing sound experiment that embraces imperfection as part of the process. Rubik’s Cube II pushes deeper into this sonic labyrinth, embracing the tension between repetition and transformation, symmetry and deviation.

As the cube continues to twist, new possibilities unfold. What will the next turn reveal?

Born and raised in northern France, Tyler Smith discovered the unique sound of acid and was immediately captured by the hypnotic vibe that emanated from the music during the end of the 1980’s.
He found himself seduced and consumed by this wave of electronic music and fell in love with the German melodic trance style labels such as Eye-Q, Platipus and Superstition.
Having followed dance music in all its forms throughout the 1990’s, he started DJ’ing and by the turn of the millennium, he started to develop a taste for the more underground techno sound which was coming out of England, Germany & Detroit.
Tyler Smith had always wanted to be involved with radio broadcasts and this ambition kicked off in earnest when he started playing regularly on the ‘Tuesday Session’ show, broadcast on the very popular Radio Campus (Lille/France), which was run by Dimitri Pike (Mirage/Matrix/Subject Detroit).
Spurred on by the development of increased exposure through radio he started honing his skills in music production. This brought about more exposure for his music mission and by 2004 Tyler was performing on key profile dance music stations in France and the Netherlands. From 2006 to 2012, he managed the ‘Interstate 94’ show with Erell Ranson & Pedro Cali for the famous Livesets.com webradio. This was quickly followed by the aptly named ‘B-Side Show’ which showcased the darker, offbeat & industrial sounds.
In 2006 Tyler’s finally realized the goal of having his debut vinyl release which was in collaboration with Bionic on French label ‘Audiocrash’. This was quickly followed by several upstanding digital releases on various labels.
Over the years, Tyler’s side to the music has become darker & more industrial, which in turn has led to the birth of his most acclaimed project : Black Smith Craft, with music released on labels including Pohjola, Limetree, UTCH rec., Ante-rasa, Bass pressure...
Since 2008, Tyler has played in various events across Europe alongside artists like Kr!z, the 65d mavericks, Bas Mooy, DJ Toki, DJ Boss, Bionic, Dimitri Pike, Arrestar, Sean Matters, Systemic, Victor Martinez, Phase, James Jaymal, Innercystem…
After more than 25 years acting for underground techno music, Tyler keeps on spreading the word about tasty electronic music with a radio show related to techno and electro on Fnoob (Empty space podcast) and a series of offbeat and industrial podcast under his Black Smith Craft alias on ARP radio.

We're back! WE FORFEIT return to Radio Relativa for our 50th installment. Quite the milestone. The half formed memories and hours of television missed, the joys one hundred hours spent trying to put a sentence together. 

In all seriousness, or some shade of it, we’re delighted to have reached such a number and are back in the bowels of tradition to bring you our favourite tracks of 2024(ish)

Serendipitously, or through rigorous and frightful struggle, this edition has a warm numerical suffix sensation. Twenty four tracks of 2024. Unceremoniously punctuated by inane chat and blurry recollections, this is a super special collection and one to warm the heart during our new age of tariffs and tone deaf tantrums.

80s Synthpop through to Chicago house, acid house, electro and techno.
No clippy-cloppy 'mnml' bobbins or business techno though.

Spent years being the obligatory 'Bedroom DJ' along with regular visits to the techno mecca 'The Orbit' and other nights, mainly Leeds based, such as 'Superconductor', 'Darkside' & 'Detatched', culminated with a DJ spot at Detatched in 2009 playing a mainly electro/italo-house set in the bar.
What followed then was a monthly resident spot playing techno when supporting artists in the main room or the chance to play electro, house and electro-pop in the bar at Detatched followed by Future-Past and the short-lived Secret Maze, supporting some of the cream of the techno scene including warm-up slots for Claude Young, James Ruskin, Marcel Fengler, Shed, Peter van Hoesen, Joey Beltram, Octave One, Truss/MPIA3, Detroit Techno Militia, Forward Strategy Group, 65d Mavericks, Subjected and Xhin amongst others. That was supplemented by appearing on the same bill as many other DJs and artists including Hardfloor, CJ Bolland, Woody McBride, Alan Oldham, Rolando, Derrick May, DJ Bone, Reeko, Exium, Sandwell District, Grovskopa, Ancient Methods, Inigo Kennedy, Bas Mooy, Damon Wild, Takaaki Itoh, Go Hiyama and Neil Landstrumm.

The label was established in 2018 as a means to release the back catalogue of renowned Jungle Techno label Underdog Recordings, which ran from 1993-1995. It quickly expanded from beyond the original goal and now reissues sought after, rare and classic records from the Jungle, Rave, Bleep House, Techno and Jungle Techno genres.

The Vinyl Fanatiks aim is to track down and work with the original artists from the early 1990’s, to reissue their music on vinyl only, and to support the record hunters and vinyl diggers from around the world with quality pressings and superb mastering; a way to show respect and share the story of those that created these incredible records.

The vision is not to focus on the obvious artists of that time but to dig a little deeper and find those that came and went but their legacy still holds true to this day. Some of these producers only released one record and vanished soon after but their music still resonates into the 21st century, accumulating new audiences across the globe, far beyond the catchment of the UK pirate radios and muddy fields of 25 years ago. What happened to these artists? Its Vinyl Fanatik’s mission to find out!

Each record captures a moment in time, a vibe that was true and innocent from a period when music was far more synonymous with rebellion and anarchy than today’s finely polished productions and conformist club pop. This music itself bred on the outskirts of society, fuelled by the passion of the rave, its lineage stemming from the Acid House era of 1988. Often produced on minimal equipment, with minimal skills and knowledge, its audio blueprint transcends to new generations, a rawness that no expensive audio plug in could ever create in this present day.

Vinyl Fanatiks wants to pay homage to these young producers who forged the foundations of the multi-million pound EDM scene we have now. Each of these artists has their own tale to tell, their own memories to share. Limited by their own geographical status within the UK, they somehow still all managed to connect and influence each other, years before the internet, mobile phones and social media that we have today. But the music knew no limits and had no boundaries, transcending generations to this day.
