Speaking in Code is a movie about electronic music.

Our Story:

The Beginning:

In 2008, Chicago was suffering from a lack of quality electronic dance music on local radio. Attempts that were made, failed miserably and seemed markedly behind what was being played on European radio shows (e.g., BBC RADIO ONE).

Peter Kazimierski

In late September of 2008 – Peter Kazimierski, local Chicago DJ and promoter, set out to create an online platform for people interested in underground electronic music, specifically Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Minimal. He developed a website that soon became an internationally recognized brand in the electronic music industry.

 Chicago (Round One)

JustQualityMusic’s (JQM) first project was a live, online radio stream, featuring pre-recorded sets by a variety of recognized and established international underground DJ’s.

Soon after the radio stream launch, JQM began a live, independent two-hour show called Weekly Record Check. The first hour featured updates of the best new music releases in House, Deep House, Techno and Minimal. The second hour featured an interview and guest mix from an internationally recognized electronic music artist. Weekly Record Check was hosted by Peter Kazimierski (aka PeteOne) and aired on Thursday nights, for 48 consecutive weeks, between 2008 and 2009. The show’s early success attracted international recognition and gained fans from all corners of the globe.

In October of 2009, Christopher Grabowski and Amy Ewaldt joined JQM to start a new show titled Sunday DJ Therapy. The show was broadcast live on Sunday nights from 9pm to 1am CST, from the home recording studio of Christopher Grabowski (aka K-rAd). During each broadcast, K-rAd (and Amy) hosted a laid-back dinner for a small crowd of their close industry and music-loving friends. Sunday DJ Therapy featured a variety of music (that wasn’t necessarily typical of JQM’s regular broadcast), including Chicago House, Beat Box, Deep House, Tech House, and even old-school Hip Hop.

Both Shows were recorded live and archived the next day to the JQM podcast.

 Washington D.C

In late 2009, JQM moved to Washington, DC, where they continued the radio stream and released a few more episodes of both Weekly Record Check and Sunday DJ Therapy.

Seeing an opportunity to expand, JQM events was established, gaining recognition on the local DJ scene.

During JQM’s two-years in DC, they organized and co-organized over 20 underground events, featuring the best and the biggest names in the electronic music world. They also organized a Washington, DC premiere of the electronic music documentary by Amy Grill, Speaking in Code. The event was featured in The Washington Post.

JQM’s work also included collaborative partnerships with Paxahau for Movement (Detroit 2009/2010), PlexiPr for Electric Zoo (New York) and Mutek (Montreal), all world renowned music festivals. JQM performed media work for both events, including interviews, photography and video, all which were distributed through our outlets (JQM’s YouTube channel and website, and various social media).

 Return to Chicago (March 2011 – Round Two)

After a successful run in DC, Peter returned to Chicago to begin the next phase of JQM. In April of 2012, Pepe Bradock and Vincent Lemieux were brought in for a two-room warehouse event that became the largest underground electronic music party of 2012 in Chicago. Despite high attendance and spectacular setup, JQM was ultimately discouraged by issues that arose due to a lack of reliable industry partners. After a brief hiatus, JQM returned in June of 2012, hosting a private birthday party featuring Alland Byallo, at the infamous Peoplemuver.

Label

In July of 2011, Peter collaborated with fellow Chicago DJ and producer, Noah Galuszka, to start a new project, JQM Recordings, a full fledged music label.

2012

Work has continued with both JQM and JQM Recordings, including the launch of extensive new websites. Most recently, a Summer series of weekly rooftop events was hosted. In August,

Alois Hahnenkamp aka dj:mace was born 1969 in Vienna, Austria. His father, an enthusiastic hobby musician, lay the foundation-stone of music understandings in his early years. At the age of four he got his first portable record player. From this moment on his parents record library was not safe anymore and the first influences were the dance music of the fifties to the seventies. Jazz, Soul, Funk, Metal and New Wave followed….

Miserable tries in learning to play the piano and the decision to become a professional bookseller prevented an early musical career. But finally the first visit of a so called “Rave” at the “Arena” in Vienna started his interest in electronic music again. Fascinated by the exciting moods he fell more and more into the new music styles of the so called “Techno-Generation”.

The first affordable personal computers allowed him to start his own compositions and arrangements. Sadly none of a few very interesting songs have been released until now. Beside he worked as a DJ at private parties where the music styles of the eighties and nineties were dominating.

Finally at the age of thirty he got his first opportunities to work as a professional DJ in dance clubs and pubs. After three months of hard training he already played as resident DJ in the “Sonderbar” in Vienna. Further appearances at “Maxim Afterhour” and “Gerard” followed. Public appearances for Radio “PartyFM 106,7″ in Vienna und Lower Austria approved the skills of our “late qualified”. Bookings in Vienna’s hippest clubs (Meierei, Atrium, Fledermaus,…) followed. Highlights so far have been DJ-Sets at the “Rainbow Parade” 2001/2002 and the “Loveparade” 2002 in Vienna.

During 2005 and 2012 he worked beside of Christian Neuberger (T.S.O.) as Resident DJ for the H12-Musiclab at the SAS Radission Style Hotel in viennas first district.

Since 2010 he was part of Christian Neubergers musical project "Sound Society Allstars", which came to an sudden end in summer 2018 because of the death of his long lasting friend and musical mate Christian Neuberger.

At the end of 2014 he got in contact with Eva Bischof and Gery Herlbauer, founder of "4youreye" (https://www.4youreye-projection.design/), a national and international respected duo for live visual perfomances.
Since then he was part of the so called "Lichtbogen-Family", a creative group of visual and audio artists and already played at festivals like "playground AV" in Vienna, 2015.

In 2016 dj:mace decided to say farewell to dancefloors in Vienna, still producing his podacsts in irregular order.

His last public appearance was at the "Fantastic Gondolas" Festival placed in Lech, Austria in 2017.

South London’s DJ Counselling, aka Ash Arnold, is known for creating hand-played rhythms with an original approach to groove. Being part of the electronic dance scene for over 20 years, Ash has worn many hats: producer, remixer, DJ, record label owner, band leader and, first and foremost, drummer. First surfacing as DJ Counselling with his debut single “Pollard’s Thrill” in 2018, Ash uses real instruments and live recording techniques with analogue synthesisers to create deep, atmospheric music that is as uplifting as it is emotive.

Whether in his home studio in London or mobile studio in Berlin, Ash explains how he knows he’s onto something special “when it doesn’t feel like the music is coming from me anymore. For a moment, I get so lost in what I’m creating that I hear it as though someone else is making it.” The DJ Counselling project gathered momentum in 2020 with lauded releases “Every Day the Sun Comes Up”, “Cool Air” and “Wide Awake in an Open Space”, which drew fans like Tom Ravenscroft and Jungle.

With DJ Counselling, Ash doesn’t intend to deliver big club hits but rather creates music that reflects his mood or location at the time of writing. Nonetheless, his music is hugely popular on the dancefloor; being played by the likes of Richie Hawtin and Bonobo. Esteemed for his eclecticism and versatility, Ash brings the club to the concert hall, and vice versa, with his ever-evolving live performances. Expect percussion instruments, classical sensibilities, and complex analogue synths being given equal attention on stage.

DJ Counselling’s new album, Alt-Mobeat, underscores Ash’s symphonic craftsmanship and esteem as a musician. It is difficult to place DJ Counselling into a specific genre. From tracks like “Cool Air”, one of Spotify’s Best Electronic Songs of 2021, to his latest works, Ash has never tried to fit himself into a box. Instead, he applies an emotional connection to everything he creates, with a strong groove always being the main focus.
