As Roses Remember

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel Ubik

It focuses specifically on the team of eleven "inertials," that is anti-psionic talents assembled by Glen Runciter to go to the lunar location of businessman Stanton Mick's company, and do a job eliminating the effects of various psionic talents, likely employed by Ray Hollis.  The team includes 4 anti-precogs, 4 anti-telepaths, 1 anti-animator, 1 anti-psychokineticist, and the as yet not entirely understood talent of Pat Conley.  Runciter and tester Joe Chip accompany them.

Philip Dick, Ubik - Runciter's Team of Inertials - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel Ubik

It focuses specifically on the ambush that Ray Hollis engineers, using Stanton Mick's company, based on the moon, as a potential new client for Runciter Associates. Glen Runciter, Joe Chip, and a team of 11 inertials (anti-psionic talents) fly to the location. They are asked not to take readings, which Joe Chip does anyways, discovering that Mick is actually a bomb in human disguise.  It turns out that there is a conspiracy that had been laid for quite a while, involving Hollis and his organization, perhaps Mick, Pat Conley, and Runciter's talent scout Ashwood.

Philip Dick, Ubik - Stanton Mick, Ray Hollis, and The Trap - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel Ubik

It focuses specifically on the mysterious and miraculous substance Ubik that gets referenced in advertisements at the start of every chapter of the work (except the final one) as well as by Runciter in a video Joe Chip sees in his apartment. Ubik turns out to be a substance, developed by Ella Runciter and "other responsible half-lifers" that in its contemporary form undoes and protects against the effects of entropy and consumption by Jory in half-life. It can also be reverted to earlier an essentially unusable versions as well, as Joe Chip finds out.

BEYOND THE HELIOSPHERE WAV

Society has yet to fully grapple with the administrative chaos that has ensued from the growth of the urban. One such city allows tremendous insight into the process of urbanization in the new millennium: Bengaluru. During the past two decades, Bengaluru’s real estate sector and infrastructure investments have exploded in a massive transformation that stimulated rapid urbanization and unbounded growth. The coedited collection of writings Chronicles of a Global City: Speculative Lives and Unsettled Futures in Bengaluru explores how people caught up in the whirlwinds of change—construction laborers, street vendors, gig workers—experience, struggle, strive, and speculate to make a livable city for themselves.

Vinay Gidwani is professor of geography and global studies at the University of Minnesota and author of Capital Interrupted: Agrarian Development and the Politics of Work in India.

Hemangini Gupta is lecturer in gender and global politics and associate director of GENDER.ED at the University of Edinburgh. She is author of Experimental Times: Startup Capitalism and Feminist Futures in India and coeditor of Feminist Studies: An Introductory Reader.

Kaveri Medappa is a postdoctoral researcher in human geography at the University of Oxford. 

Swathi Shivanand is assistant professor at the Department of Liberal Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences in Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, India.

Michael Goldman is associate professor of sociology and global studies at the University of Minnesota and author of Imperial Nature: The World Bank and Struggles for Social Justice in the Age of Globalization.

Philip Jose Farmer, The Lovers - Breaking The Taboo On Sex in SciFi? - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century fantasy and science fiction writer, Philip Jose Farmer's novella The Lovers (which can be found anthologized in his Strange Relations 

It discusses the narrative setting for the novella, specifically the aftermath of the "Apocalyptic War", in which a virus killed most of humanity globally. After the pandemic, communities of survivors repopulated the Earth, coming from Hawaii, Iceland, the Caucasus, Israel, Central Africa, and Malaysia.  At the time of the story, the globe is divided between four super-states.

Philip Jose Farmer, The Lovers - Earth After the Apocalyptic War - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century fantasy and science fiction writer, Philip Jose Farmer's novella The Lovers (which can be found anthologized in his Strange Relations 

It discusses the overall metaphysical and religious perspective developed by Isaac Sigman, which is the official doctrine of the "Sturch" or state-church of the Haijac Union, one of the main world powers in the story, and the one that Hal Yarrow belongs to. The sturch's interpretation of Sigmen holds that a person's thought can be unreal (which is bad), that people are responsible not only for everything they do but everything that happens to them, and that they can fall into the mistake of desiring a  "pseudofuture".

It discusses the planet of Ozagen, which provides the setting for the majority of the chapters of the novella. Evolution has occurred differently on this planet by comparison to earth, and the dominant species of the planet is the Wogglebug, a type of pseudo-arthopoda.
