This kitten, named Prune, became the foundation of the Sphynx breed. Breeders continued to develop the breed by selectively breeding hairless cats to produce a stable genetic pool. The breed was named “Sphynx” after the famous Egyptian statues, though it has no direct connection to ancient Egypt.

Distinctive Characteristics
Sphynx cats are immediately recognizable due to their lack of fur. However, they are not completely hairless; they have a fine layer of peach-fuzz-like down on their skin, which gives them a soft, suede-like texture. Their skin can come in a variety of colors and patterns, similar to furred cats.

In addition to their hairlessness, Sphynx cats have other distinctive physical traits:

Large Ears: Their ears are large and open, giving them a bat-like appearance.
Prominent Cheekbones: Their faces are marked by high, prominent cheekbones.
