The latest episode of GT is also the first installment of TENURE TRAX, an occasional series examining dance music in New York from the vantage of scene participants – not only DJs but also venue owners, party throwers, record sellers – who played a key role in its development. Guests in this series share their stories while also presenting records drawn from their experience in NYC nightlife. 

Cecily is the Midwest partygoer-turned-New York DJ who founded Starvue: a tiny, Loft-inspired dance floor that helped shift the NYC nightlife center of gravity to Bushwick (of all places). How did this self-described “hold my hair” girl become the proprietor of one of Brooklyn’s most venerated DIY spaces? Bio::

Eric Kupper is celebrating 30 years of house music in 2016. He was recently chosen as one of the top 20 soulful house artists in the world for 2015 by the leading international online authority for house music, Traxsource. Eric enjoyed great success with his collaboration with Kenny Summit “Over Here”, under the moniker of “Proper”. This release through Classic Music/Defected held the #1 position for over 2 weeks on the Traxsource main chart in November 2015. Eric’s solo effort on his own Hysteria Records also was a top 5 hit on the Traxsource deep house chart in August 2015.

Eric Kupper got his start three decades ago working as a keyboardist, guitarist, and songwriter for such producer and remixers as David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Arthur Baker, Mark Kamins, Justin Strauss, Peter Rauhofer, and Richie Jones to name a few.

Since 1986 he has played on, remixed, and/or produced over 2000 records for artists spanning all contemporary musical genres. He is one of the few artists in dance music today that is a master multi-instrumentalist. A true musician. Over the years, thousands and thousands of hours in the studio has polished Eric Kupper into one of the most sought after producers/remixer/musicians in the world.

Much of Kupper’s massive discography is derived from his work as a studio musician and a remixer. His work as a multi-instrumentalist and arranger has helped sell over 50 million records for artists such as Anastacia, Marc Anthony, Celine Dion, Jessica Simpson, and Jennifer Lopez. In the role of “additional production and keyboards” Eric has worked with Madonna, Celine Dion, Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears, LCD Soundsystem, Coldplay, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Anastacia, Seal, Janet Jackson, Kelis, Jamiroquai, Eric Clapton, Everything But The Girl, Björk, and David Bowie...

In 2011 through early 2014, Eric placed a great deal of focus on his partnership with long-term collaborator Frankie Knuckles, under the name "Director's Cut".

The first single "I'll Take You There" featured Jaime Principle on vocals and was released on Nocturnal Groove. Since then, nearly everything with the "Director's Cut" name on it (original tracks and remixes) has reached the top 5 on the Traxsource downloads chart, most topping the chart at #1. The remix of Human Life's "In It Together" was truly one of the summer anthems of 2011. The Director’s Cut remix of “Need You (100%)” by Duke Dumont feat. A*M*E hit #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Chart in August of 2013. The world lost a true
music pioneer upon Frankie's untimely passing in March 2014. Eric will continue to carry on the Director's Cut style, as a testament to his close musical relationship with Frankie.
In the summer of 2011, a new Eric Kupper original single entitled "Bloom" was released on Wave Music (which is also available on vinyl!!). It was championed by such diverse DJ’s as Louie Vega, François K., Desyn Masielo, Osunlade, Danny Howells, Paul Woolford, among many others. 2011 also saw the return of Eric's highly regarded label Hysteria Records. The first release was entitled "Emeralds" and re-established the Hysteria imprint as a major contender in house music.

Recently Eric has been directing much of his focus to his independent label Hysteria Records and remixing major label artists. His Katy Perry remix hit #1 on the Billboard Club Chart in November of 2014. He has had a massive string of hit club records recently, including his solo single on Hysteria “Oscillations”, the summer smash remix of Gusto “Disco’s Revenge”, also on Hysteria. Much more to come. Chicago’s got so much soul. From the warm-hearted people, the comfort food, to it’s rich musical history rooted in gospel, blues, and jazz… Soul runs deep in the Windy C. Just turn on the radio when you’re there, and you’re guaranteed to hear Marvin, Luther, or Anita at any given moment. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Chicago on the regular, and no trip would be complete without a stop at my favorite shop in the South Side, Mr. Peabody Records. I’d spend hours searching for rare boogie and obscure disco tracks on wax, which Mr. Peabody’s was known for. Mark Grusane, one of the owners, would play records for me while I shopped, and after awhile, he started picking up on what I was digging. On a recent trip, Mark was playing a smooth, buttery track, with infectious vocals that just hit me. I asked “Yo, what’s this?” He said, “Oh, you want steppers?” Steppers, or 2-Step soul, are mellow, mid-tempo groovers perfect for steppin’, a mid-70′s dance phenomenon that blew up in Chicago… Mark was playing “My Love Don’t Come Easy” by Jean Carn, a classic stepper, and I’ve been on that tip ever since.

MIDWAY is my latest mix that dips into the stepper sound — modern soul, R&amp;B, and smooth grooves. It’s a collection of mellow steppers and mid-tempo soul inspired by Chicago. Step to classics by Jeffree, Starvue, Mtume, Archie Bell &amp; The Drells, and Breakwater… Then glide to modern cuts by The Sunburst Band, Xscape, Martine Girault, and Erykah Badu. Selections include records I picked up at Mr. Peabody Records along with favorites played at SWEATER FUNK, San Francisco’s infamous all-vinyl boogie and modern soul party. MIDWAY was compiled and mixed together with love, letting each song to play out a little longer so you can get into the groove.
