Berberine is one of my favorite supplements out there and has been for several years. The reason is simple: berberine helps treat the biggest and most important conditions that people face including weight gain, insulin resistance, and gut dysfunction. It’s not only healthy for people who are already healthy, but it’s also amazing for people who want to stay healthy!

You can use it to assist with weight loss, balance your blood sugar, build more muscle mass, or just optimize your physique.

Let’s talk about the benefits of berberine and why you can make a strong case to use it. 

Many of the benefits we are going to be discussing today stem from Berberine’s ability to increase something called AMPK or AMP kinase. This is the same enzyme that is increased when you exercise. So when you think about the benefits, think about berberine as a tiny bottle of exercise. It doesn’t replace exercise but it’s helpful to wrap your head around how it’s working. 

Activating AMPK increases fat burning potential, mitochondrial proliferation in muscle tissue, insulin sensitivity, and much more. 

With this in mind, let’s talk about the benefits:

1. Berberine can help improve insulin resistance and low blood sugar. It has been shown to be as powerful as some medications at lowering blood sugar (metformin). 

2. Berberine can help you lose weight. Berberine enhances the effectiveness of diet and exercise. 

3. Berberine can help improve your gut health. Berberine increases butyrate production and reduces local inflammation in the gut. 

4. Berberine can help lower cholesterol. Some studies show that berberine can reduce cholesterol more effectively than statins. 

5. Berberine helps treat metabolic disorders like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, type II diabetes, PCOS, high blood pressure, obesity, and elevated triglycerides. 

6. Berberine can help your brain stay healthy.

Can you teach an old drug new tricks? 

In this episode, we interview Dr. Nazish Sayed, an assistant professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery and the Cardiovascular Institute at Stanford University. Dr. Sayed has a unique role as a research faculty in the Department of Surgery and his expertise in vascular disease. We talk about the beneficial effects of statins on vascular function (in addition to their well-known cholesterol control function) and how statins can prevent cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Sayed et al published a paper in Nature Cardiovascular Research in May 2023 on statins at the molecular level (https://www.nature.com/articles/s44161-023-00267-1), and we discuss the challenges faced in getting the paper published (four years!). The episode concludes with a discussion of Dr. Joseph Wu, Dr. Joseph Woo, and Dr. Sayed's future research plans.

A Closer Look at Statins with Dr. Nazish Sayed

It is a good idea for every individual to get their lipoprotein(a) levels tested at least once in their lifetime. It is an independent and powerful risk factor that helps understand cardiovascular risk better.

Understanding the Importance of Lipoprotein(a)

BUFFALO, NY – July 22, 2025 – A new #research paper was #published in Volume 16 of Oncotarget on July 21, 2025, titled “Statins exhibit anti-tumor potential by modulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling in colorectal cancer.”

In this work, led by first author Sneha Tripathi from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research and corresponding author Sanjeev Galande from the Center of Excellence in Epigenetics at Shiv Nadar University, researchers discovered that statins, widely used to lower cholesterol, may also suppress colorectal cancer growth. This finding highlights a potential new role for these common drugs in cancer prevention and therapy.

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and new strategies are urgently needed to improve treatment results. Statins, originally developed to lower cholesterol levels, have gained attention for their possible anti-cancer properties. The study investigated how statins affect the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, a critical driver in colorectal cancer development and progression.

The researchers discovered that statins disrupt the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, leading to lower levels of tumor-promoting proteins and to cancer-suppressing cellular behaviors. Experiments in both colorectal cell cultures and mouse models confirmed that statins reduced tumor growth without causing noticeable side effects. This study further revealed that statins downregulate SATB1, a protein linked to aggressive tumor behavior, while increasing SATB2, a protein with tumor-suppressing effects. These changes made the cancer cells less able to grow and spread.

“This reciprocal regulation shifts cellular phenotypes between epithelial and mesenchymal states in 3D spheroid models.”

Overall, the findings suggest that statins could be repurposed to complement existing colorectal cancer treatments or even be used in preventive strategies for high-risk individuals. By targeting the molecular machinery that drives colorectal tumor development, statins offer a promising, accessible, and well-understood option for further research in cancer therapy.

This research opens the door to larger clinical studies to explore how best to integrate statins into cancer care. If successful, this approach could provide a cost-effective strategy for reducing the global burden of colorectal cancer, which remains a significant health challenge.
