Statue [Free Download]

There were celebrations around the world when the statue of Edward Colston, a prominent figure in the transatlantic slave trade, was pulled down during a Black Lives Matter march in Bristol in 2020. But not everyone agreed it was a step forward for racial justice. How did this act of protest impact those who are fighting against racism in Bristol today? 

This radio documentary revisits the story of Colston’s toppling and goes beyond the headlines to uncover voices and perspectives that were overlooked. Through interviews with community activists, poets and historians, the programme highlights a range of unexpected opinions and personal reflections on the event and its aftermath.

Alfred Salter was a GP and Socialist campaigner who, along with his wife Ada, worked among the very poorest of London's poor, in Bermondsey, where you will now find a set of statues depicting Alfred, Ada and their daughter Joyce. This group of bronze figures is known as "Dr Salter's Daydream".

He was also a keen gardener.

Dr. SALTER'S DREAM

Bench-sore by years
and bored past tears
of being forever stuck, worse luck,
around the clock outside his
favourite pub but never in it,

street-bestatued Alfred Salter
dreams all day of flower beds
and muddy-trousered rummagings,
of sinking grateful fingers
into cool, damp, yielding earth...

craves the serotonin dose
that only close proximity to
wriggly-bug-rich, microbe-laden
fresh-turned loam
can loose. 


Meanwhile, six feet down
beneath a smarter part of town,
the mortal Alf
(or aught’ll now be left of him)
knows no such discontent:

what need of
mood-enhancing hormones
when you're soil itself?

Multiple slam-winner, finalist at Hammer & Tongue Cambridge 2018 and 2019, Ken Cumberlidge cut his performance teeth on the pub poetry scene of the 1970s.

Since 2011 Ken has been based in Norwich, but can be lured out of cover by good company and an open mic - a proclivity that has led him to become an habitué of the slam poetry/spoken word scene.

Ken writes about love, sex, nature, loss, identity and queerness, with an occasional foray into the eerie and macabre.  Poke him with a sharp enough stick and he may even wake up long enough to get shouty about politics.
