Kennedy School of Government Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights Global LGBTQI+ Human Rights Program counts its first year accomplishments (interviewed by David Hunt).

And in NewsWrap: same-gender couples in Hong Kong who have legal recognition from abroad could get health-related spousal rights under a new government proposal, Pope Leo XIV is expected to maintain his predecessor’s policy of allowing priests to bless same-gender couples, more than 100 transgender inmates in Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison are missing and presumed dead following Israeli airstrikes, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein vetoes bills targeting the rights of transgender people and DEI programs, Wisconsin’s Supreme Court narrowly votes to affirm the state’s ban on conversion therapy, the erasure of bisexuals follows the disappearance of trans people from the Stonewall National Monument and other queer-related U.S. National Park Service websites, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Marcos Najera and Nathalie Munoz (produced by Brian DeShazor).

Harvard’s Global LGBTQI+ Human Rights Program

In June 1969 a police raid on a gay bar in Greenwich Village exploded into a night of violent protest. What followed was a week of rioting with pitched battles between the New York gay community and riot police. It was a watershed in gay history which inspired a new militant phase in the gay rights movement. Forty years on, Tom Robinson asks why the word Stonewall still has such a powerful resonance for gay people around the world.

During the 1960s homosexuality was still classified as a mental illness in the US, with "sufferers" subject to frequent victimisation from the police and society at large. As a private members bar, the Stonewall offered a refuge of sorts where gay people were allowed to dance freely together. When police entered the bar shortly after midnight on a hot and humid Friday night in 1969, it exploded in unprecedented fashion.

Contributors include Seymour Pine, the policeman who led the raid; and Howard Smith, the journalist stuck inside when the crowd turned on the police and attempted to set fire to the Stonewall Inn. There are also eye-witness from the rioters themselves and we learn how the rallying in subsequent months led to a sea change in gay rights activism and the establishment of the annual Gay Pride parade to mark the riots.

Also featuring previously unheard archive interviews with late activists Craig Rodwell and Barbara Gittings. And we return to the Stonewall Inn, as it is today, to find out what resonance the word Stonewall has for the next generation of gay people. In 2009 has the battle been won?

Tom Robinson kickstarted his own musical career with the notoriety of Glad To Be Gay and rounded it off twenty years later with an album cheerfully titled Having It Both Ways. He presented new music shows on BBC Radio 6 Music show for 23 years from 2002-2025.

Tom Robinson (b.1950) is a songwriter and broadcaster who's released 14 studio albums and won two Sony awards for his radio work. He champions new independent artists on his podcast The BBC Introducing Mixtape on 6 Music and sponsors the music blog Fresh On The Net. He's also co-written songs with Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Dan Hartman over the years. The original Tom Robinson Band first became known in the 1970s as supporters of Rock Against Racism and LGBT rights, following their breakthrough hit  ‘2-4-6-8 Motorway’
