Tameka Jones grew up on Aurora St. in the historically Black neighborhood of Rondo in St Paul. 

Since she was a child, she’s felt out of place, and struggled to reconcile the differences between where she lived, where she learned, and why she was treated so differently. 

In those years, what illuminated her path to understanding was her grandmother’s all loving acceptance. And now she honors her grandmother’s memory and teachings through her lipstick business, located right by her childhood home.

Jesus is the master of every situation. We make a lot of plans, like Saul was doing in Acts 9, but Jesus is always in control. We're playing checkers, while he's playing chess. So we can do a little holy crowing about how awesome Jesus is. That can lead us to more desperate pleading for Jesus to reign in each new scenario we encounter. And that can lead us to humble kneeling before him as we submit to follow him. No enemy is greater than our Champion. No one of us is too small for our Champion to notice. No minister is more important than our Champion. And this situation is no more challenging for our Champion than the last! He's the Chessmaster!

If you've ever driven on Snelling Aveneue in St. Paul, down by Highland Park High School, you've probably seen the Highland Park Water Tower, even if you didn't know it. Standing at 127 feet tall, it is a beautiful 1928 stone tower located on one of the highest points in St. Paul, making it the perfect place to store water, and see a unique view of the Twin Cities. Though it was decommissioned in 2017, the tower is open to the public twice a year - in July and October - so that everyone can experience the walk up to, and view from, the top of this historic building.

Climbing to the top of the Highland Water Tower

God watches over his word to fulfill  it. That was the declaration God made to Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:12. That was the concept Paul demonstrated, in Acts 13, to a synagogue of listeners in Pisidian Antioch. He showed how Jesus was the personification of God's faithfulness, how throughout history God had kept his word and was still keeping it. Our only hope remains the same, that God made promises to us--in Jesus, for forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life--that he will keep. The gospel, therefore, must be the Christian's greatest hope and joy.

Paul and Barnabas experienced lots of ups and downs in Pisidian Antioch, as described in Acts 13:38-52. With enormous grace from the Holy Spirit, they were undergoing a loss of identity as they found themselves increasingly outcasts from their synagogue and nation. And yet, God was watching over them. It is at this point that Luke introduces the concept of predestination, which the rest of the New Testament consistently ascribes to the love of God. God watches over us in the ups and downs, in the twists and turns, because those who believe in Jesus have always been his, and that is our primary identity.
