Geirfuglasker

Once widespread across the whole North Atlantic, the Great Auk had the misfortune to be easy to catch and useful to humans for food, down, oil, or as fishing bait. As a consequence, by the beginning of the 19th century it had vanished from all but a few remote holdouts.

A large, flightless seabird, it was known by early European seafarers as the 'Penguin' (possibly from the Welsh 'pen gwyn', or Breton 'penn gwenn', for 'white head') and the unrelated Southern hemisphere species were named for their resemblance to it.

On 3 June 1844, the last two confirmed specimens were killed on Eldey, off the coast of Iceland. A previous Icelandic sea stack stronghold, Geirfuglasker, was submerged during a volcanic eruption in 1830. Stac an Armin in the St Kilda archipelago is the last known location of a Great auk in the British Isles - it was caught, kept for a few days, then killed as a 'witch' in 1840. Funk Island, off the coast of Newfoundland, was home to tens of thousands up until the late 18th century.

John Campbell is a Los Angeles-based composer who scores movie trailers and licenses music for major TV and movie productions like SNL, WWE, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows. His passion for music began in Northern California, where he was born and raised. As a child, he showed an interest in music starting on the violin, and moving to piano in his teenage years. He honed his craft by playing in church and various bands as he grew up. After touring with a country band, John moved to Los Angeles to attend the Musicians Institute where he graduated from KIT with an AA in music. After completing his education, John went on to teach film scoring and digital music at the M.I for two years.

Known for his ability to seamlessly blend orchestral and electronic elements, John creates scores that are both powerful and nuanced. His passion for music led him to score two feature films and two dozen short films. Over the years, he has worked on various projects, including recording an album of instrumental songs with Grammy award winner David Hodges called AVOX:The Fragile World. 

John Campbell's compositions are driven by a deep desire to evoke emotion and create immersive sonic landscapes. This passion has recently led him to explore the world of modular synthesis, inspired by his former teacher Alessandro Cortini. John finds the creative possibilities and emotional depth of ambient synth music to be both satisfying and healing.  Through his dedication and hard work, he has established himself as a successful and respected musician and composer.
