하지만 병실의 공기는 어딘가 서늘했고,
그것이 묘하게 편안하게 느껴졌다.

매미 소리도, 멀리서.
창밖에 펼쳐진 뭉게구름은, 시간의 흐름만을 묵묵히 전하고 있었다.

그가 왔다.
언제나처럼, 노크를 하고.
언제나처럼, 웃으며 “안녕하세요”라고 말했다.

하지만 그날은, 뭔가 달랐다.
교복이 아니라 사복이었기 때문――은 아니었다.
그의 눈빛 속에, 조금은 “결심의 색”이 보였기 때문이었다.

“……들어줬으면 하는 게 있어.”

나는 가슴 깊은 곳이 꽉 조여 오는 걸 느꼈다.
예감하고 있었다.
여름방학 동안, 분명 무언가가 변해 버릴 거라는 걸.

“응, 뭔데?”

그는 작게 숨을 고르고, 말했다.

“나, 5년 일관제 간호사 양성 고등학교에 진학하기로 했어.”

――아, 역시.

하지만 그 말은, 이상하게 아프지 않았다.
슬펐지만, 자랑스럽기도 했다.
왜냐하면 그것은, 그가 “자신의 미래”를 제대로 선택했다는 증거였으니까.

“……그렇구나. 정말, 간호사 목표로 하는 거네.”

“응. 최대한 빨리, 네 곁에 설 수 있도록.
　‘환자를 위해서’라고 말하는 게 맞을지도 모르지만……
　나는 역시, 너를 위해서라고 말하고 싶어.”

불현듯, 시야가 흐려졌다.
그런 말, 쉽게 할 수 있는 게 아닌데.
곧게, 망설임 없이, 나를 위해 “미래”를 내어놓다니.

“……있지, 나 울어도 돼?”

“응. 나도, 조금 울 것 같아.”

우리는 그저 미소 지으며,
그리고 아주 조금 눈물을 흘렸다.

그것은 외로움이 아니었다.
하지만 분명히 가슴이 벅찼다.

“당분간은, 못 오는 날도 많아질 거야.”

“응……”

“하지만 공부가 잘 되면, 다시 페어 테스트 가져올게.
　이번에는, 국가시험 수준으로. 웃음이 나올 만큼 어려운 걸로.”

“그거, 기대할게. ……꼭, 기다릴게.”

그 말만 하고,
그는 조용히 일어섰다.

나는 마음속으로 손을 뻗어,
그의 등 뒤에 “힘내”를 살짝 묶었다.

“좋아하니까 곁에 있고 싶다, 가 아니라.
너의 미래를 위해, 나는 ‘되고 싶은 나’를 선택했다.
함께할 수 없는 시간이,
너의 기억에서 나를 멀어지게 한다 해도――
나는, 너에게 가까워지는 길을 걸어갈 거야.”

“멀어지기 위한 길”이 아니라,
“다시 만나기 위한 준비”였다.
