This piece was originally scored for large chamber ensemble (Fl, Cl, Bari Sax, Bsn, Hn, Tpt, Tbn, Gtr, B Gtr, Pno, Perc, Drum Set). I wasn't able to get a good recording of that arrangement, so I decided to do a version using instruments I could play myself!

This is my first attempt at a new type of fugue which I am tentatively calling a "hexachord fugue."  

The hexachord fugue follows the standard fugal process for the most part; however the tonality is based on the intervalic relationships and distinct sonority of a particular group of six notes (in this case C, D, Eb, F#, G, B explicitly laid out in order in the first half of the subject).  All of the basic elements of the fugue (subject, answer, and countersubject) are composed according to a guideline involving the navigation of each voice through hexachordal regions generated by transposing the "tonic" hexachord by the intervals within that hexachord in reverse order (instead of actual order so as to avoid the over-repetition of the same notes).  This guideline is flexible and is meant simply as a means of generating material and maintaining coherence.  The only strict rule of the hexachord fugue is that the subject must navigate through all 6 regions before the entrance of the answer.  Episodes, middle entries, false entries, etc. are even more flexible in that contrapuntal and voice leading considerations may override the guiding hexachordal process, yielding sonorities far-removed from the progenitor hexachord.  

In the recording, I played all three guitar parts, which are the three voices of the fugue.  I programmed the drums using Strike (I'll be getting Superior Drummer soon, so it it'll hopefully sound better).  The bass is also fake (because I don't own a bass) and is NOT part of the fugue.  Here it is serving a supporting role, doubling the guitars and at times thickening the harmony.
