Thundermoon are back with “We Can Do Better Than This”, their second EP, and first to be released on New Teeth Records. Thundermoon joined the New Teeth roster in early 2024 alongside the likes of Doom Scroller, Sarya, and The Micro Band, and have already released three singles on the label. 

Following on from their first EP “We’re Still Here” (Sep 2023), Thundermoon continue familiar nostalgia and end-of-the-world themes, in their trademark connective and hopeful way, with the juxtaposing realities of sharing adventures with pals, and the ever unescapable feeling of doom within the modern day capitalist hellscape. 

Thundermoon captivates listeners into a time-travelling, extraterrestrial exploration of this life, filled with DIY beats, retro synth sounds and heart-healing melodies. The recurring hook and EP title “We Can Do Better Than This” features in a couple of the tracks, driving home the overall themes of hope in the face of destruction and oppression, it’s a reminder that there’s another way to do all of this, there’s a better way to build the world. 

Littered with memories of 80’s movies, the joy of being a kid, and knowing you can do anything with your chosen family around you, the first track “We Can Make It” is this EP’s sing-along anthem. Unavoidable earworms that spark the magic of reliving your youth. Released as a single on 24th May, the track received support from BBC Introducing in Scotland with Phoebe Inglis-Holmes, and The Roddy Hart Show on BBC Radio Scotland.

“Perfect Chaos” follows and ignites urgency within our scopes of time. It speaks of a realism around how we cope with the state of the world, with the call to action - “We Can Do Better Than This”. An other worldly arpeggiated riff drives the track, and drives home the destruction of our planet, politically and environmentally. Released on 12th July, “Perfect Chaos” received support from BBC Rapal, Snack Mag, The Skinny, Resonate, and Alive & Amplified. 

The EP’s third single “Ritual” is Thundermoon’s darkest synth anthem yet. Have you ever felt played? Feel like you’re going in circles? This is a journey of forgiveness and sacrifice in toxic relationships, and  a dive into the feeling of apocalypse on micro levels, when our own little worlds around us fall apart and end. “Ritual” is set to drop in early September.

“We Can Do Better Than This” features two extra tracks “Truth or Dare” and “Game On”. The former motivates dancing as a solution to the endless, elaborate loops of existence. The latter is a spooky synthwave instrumental track, offering a conclusion to this 80s arpeggiated journey through space and time.

Jim Ottaway is an international award-winning Australian musician, composer and producer of original electronic instrumental music covering many genres including electronic, ambient, new age, space music and music for film and television.

Jim’s major musical influences include Tangerine Dream, Edgar Froese, Vangelis, Pink Floyd, Enigma, Johannes Schmoelling, Tony O'Connor, Christopher Franke, Lisa Gerrard and Gary Wright.

Since 2004 Jim has released over 35 independent albums in his homeland, Australia… commencing with his first release FIRST LIGHT, a light relaxing ambient album culminating in his latest release A PROMISE OF ETERNITY an exciting electronic instrumental album, officially released in July 2024.

The inspiration for Jim's music stems from his love of nature and my spiritual connection to the beautiful environment of the Gold Coast hinterland of Queensland, Australia.

At the 14th annual Zone Music Reporter (ZMR) Awards held in New Orleans in May 2018 Jim received two awards for two of his albums:
Best Electronic Album: TIMELESS e-MOTION
Best Ambient Album: DEEP SPACE BLUE.
Jim was also nominated for Album of the Year for DEEP SPACE BLUE.

Jim was also awards Best Electronic Album at the 17th annual ZMR Awards in July 2021 for his album WHEN ETERNITY TOUCHED TIME.  The album was also nominated for Album of the Year.

Another two of Jim’s albums have received international music awards nominations. SOUTHERN CROSS and INVISIBLE VORTEX were nominated for category awards in the 2016 Zone Music Reporter Awards held in New Orleans in May 2017.  Both albums were also nominated for the 2016 One World Music Awards including SOUTHERN CROSS for ‘Album of the Year’. TIMELESS e-MOTION, BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION and THRESHOLD OF THE UNIVERSE have also received a One World Music Awards nominations in recent years.

Jim was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2016, 2017 and 2024 Global Music Awards for his albums SOUTHERN CROSS, DEEP SPACE BLUE and BEYOND THE PURPLE SUN (respectively).

Since 2010 twenty-six of Jim’s tracks have been chosen as finalist in various Australian music/songwriting awards including the Australian Songwriting Awards.

During the years 2016 to 2022 thirteen eleven of Jim’s albums charted around the world.

In 2023 Jim was awarded a Schallwelle Award in the 'Der eigene Weg' (Your Own Way) category, i.e. independent musicians, at the 15th Annual Schallwelle German Electronic Music Awards for 2022. The awards were announced at a live ceremony in Kolpinghaus Bochum-Wattenscheid, Germany. At the Schallwelle 2023 Awards Jim  was named in the Top 20 for the 'Künstler international/Best Artist international' category.
