simply a break-up story with a few hip-hop cliches that sounds really good, I promise.

I sat in front of two people on the bus,
loud lonely people one usually ignores.
The person beside me, was a thin
 young man wearing a high vis shirt
and a cap that read Edmonds Lawn Care. 
His arms had tats 
depicting cartoon characters 
bright blues and reds. 
Hero characters I wasn't familiar with.
I got the impression 
He wasn't in the mood to talk. 

After a loud and mildly offensive discourse 
on the shambles that's become
of national immigration policy
the two gravel laden voices behind us,
seemed to notice the young man's ink. 
And a new question was posted to the ether. 
"How do poor people afford so many tattoos?"

The young man shot me a glance
and sighed as if what ever joy he was holding
was just released into a puddle on the floor. 
I'm sure he's heard this kind of indirect 
derision before. 
 
I took it upon myself to take up his cause 
having been young once myself. 

I turned my face 
to face the wrinkled faces behind me
their faces stuck in a frown
that was never going away. 
My glaring at them spelled out
that I wasn't going to
let their bad behavior go. 
I let an tense moment roll by
looking eye to eye
before I spoke. 

To the ignorant it may all look the same,
But there's a broad spectrum of tattoo artists,
and tattoo quality. 
It's easy to think of it like hair salons, 
you can still get a ten dollar hair cut, 
or do it yourself. 
It won't be spectacular, 
but you can. 
There's also stylists
who charge into the thousands,
for people who make millions
based on how they look.

If you think about the career of a tattoo artist,
even some who are at the top of their game,
even world famous,
there had to have been a point
where they got their first tools,
and had no experience.

In fact you can buy a complete tattoo kit
for less than the price of a new guitar.
While most tats by qualified artists are expensive,
tats by less qualified artists,
or even on the sketchy side can be had cheap or even free.
That said there's very overpriced artists
as well as underpriced. 
Just like with any other art form
the internet is filled with examples of both.

It's also true that quality tats
are VERY important to some people 
to indicate a passion 
commemorate the an important event
or many other reasons we might not understand.

Some times folks might be willing
to to make not-great financial decisions
to get something that will be with them forever,
as opposed to paying a bill
that comes around every month, 
and will quickly be forgotten. 

Maybe when you see a tatted person
you might look at their ink as a value 
you willfully don't understand
like for instance respect and manors. 

The hecklers took the scolding 
with some single syllables.
They suddenly found their hands quite interesting
and profoundly avoided engaging 
with the fellow beside me
who had turned to better hear my speech. 

I had clearly missed my stop 
but that was something I wasn't going to share.
