For the February 2025 edition of Wayward, I was very excited to drop a bunch of tracks that I had just picked up the week prior, and was salivating at the thought of playing them in a club setting! It was a super fun night, and I was joined on the decks by some very talented artists: DJ Cira (Adult Services), Jonboy (Disco Katz), and fellow DeMentha member Feen. I loved every set from each of these DJs. Here is my closing set.

(OK--another lesson learned.  People don't want to click on thumbnails featuring a cute and curious goose.  Who knew?  Anyway, yesterday's posted track "Emma's Pulse" could use some extra attention--so far, only 16 people have given it a listen.  Is everyone still traumatized by the "Untitled Goose Game"??)  

CONTENT WARNING:  Today's Interbay posted track here on SoundCloud is a techno pop breakbeat rap track that could be heard as encouraging self-harm.  That is NOT the intended message to take away from this track.  If you are struggling and if you could be a danger to yourself or others, you are encouraged to seek help immediately.  Even simply talking to someone can help guide you through tough times.  The language used in this track is meant to be understood as coming from someone who is intensely frustrated with the subject of this track.  You, the listener, are NOT the subject of this track.  This is fiction...dramatic fiction, in music and verse form.  Got it?  Cool.  

Some of you may know, I am a retired professional stand-up comedian...and I can use a clever metaphor to express some dark thoughts in a funny way.

When putting this track together, I knew I'd want at least a breakdown rap section...I just needed a subject to talk about.  

I don't know what made me think of it--but suddenly, I was inspired to write about someone who is frustrated at a friend of theirs who, annoyingly, keeps escaping consequences for his actions/mistakes.  (A variation of the "Jeannie Bueller Effect.")    

...and it all fell into place when I came up with the line "quit cutting yourself down"--which sounds like it is a positive statement...and the comedian still living in my brain (and I can't turn them off) recognized that the statement also works as a negative statement, if seen from a slightly skewed perspective.  

Instead of "Hey, don't be so hard on yourself!  You're all right."--in THIS context, it means "Hey, you deserve the punishment you're receiving...accept it, learn from it...and don't free yourself from that reckoning."  

(Now, perhaps triple ironically, what if I'm the subject AND the voice of the song and I'm directing some self criticism at myself?  What if I'm telling myself that I don't need emotional propping up as much as I have to accept my own role in my current situation.  Whooooaaa--deep!  Get my therapist on the line, we might have some stuff to talk about!)  

So, the metaphor being used here is:  You've done something or made a mistake, big enough to be "sentenced to be hung" (exaggeration for comedic impact) and "you shouldn't cut the rope and free yourself because you should accept your punishment for what you've done.)

It is a harsh metaphor--which is why I've included a content warning with this track.  This isn't a "you should harm yourself" track, this is a "tough love/intervention" track...and, in a very roundabout way, it IS a positive and encouraging message...at the end (in the same way that an intervention for someone with substance abuse issues can be positive and encouraging, in spirit...if exactly opposite of that in execution.)     

Pretty heady topic with some nuance necessary and and an undestanding that this is a dramatic characterization--like a play--all for a synth-fueled breakbeat mutant pop track, that's for sure.  

Is it too dark?  I could rewrite the bars...get Kanno back in here to flow again, just with a different spin.  The comedian in me likes the dark cleverness, but did I go too far?

There's something new being posted every day (so far) and you never know which one of Forrest Gump's chocolates you're gonna get.)

"Quit Cutting Yourself Down" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

So, yesterday, I grabbed the track "Herbert" out of the special section of the Vault where I've been storing a couple of finished tracks that I think will work quite well when Spooky Week comes around.  I did that because I didn't feel like I could finish THIS track in time to post it yesterday, and posting "Herbert" instead, gave me the time I needed to finish it.

I'd actually started this track soon after sourcing some of the news samples for the track "Rammifications" (the track posted the day before "Herbert" posted)...when I learned that the front man for Nitzer Ebb, Douglas McCarthy, had died.    

This hit me hard because I've always been a fan of and inspired by Nitzer Ebb, one of the best EBM (Electronic Body Music) bands of all time.  I used to sneak "Control I'm Here" into sets I did at mainstream clubs (it would mix surprisingly well with "Pump Up The Jam" by Technotronic) and I put so much Nitzer Ebb on mixtapes I'd make for people.  

I got to see Nitzer Ebb at First Avenue in Minneapolis when they were on their Belief tour.  (I bought a shirt--so, I had both a Nitzer Ebb "Belief" tour shirt and a George Michael "Faith" tour shirt--the 80s were a WEIRD time.)  It remains one of my favorite concerts that I've ever been to--minimal and powerful, with an audience that was far more diverse than I'd expected.  

My initial reaction was "No, he can't be dead"--and that's where the germ seed of this track sprouted from.  

At first, I wanted to make this a track that sounded like early Nitzer Ebb--but I've been trying to do that for almost 40 years and haven't gotten nearly as close to that ideal as I would want to yet.  This time was no different.  

As I always say, "Whatever target I'm aiming at, the only bullseye I hit is sounding exactly like Interbay."  

So, while there are hints of EBM, it is definitely more of an EBM/electro hybrid...and thus, it becomes yet another Interbay track that fits not particularly neatly into any of a dozen different subgenres.  I did try to push the bass as hard as I could--look at the waveform.  I HAVE WON THE LOUDNESS WARS!!  

Some of you will recognize the vocal sample, but if you don't--it isn't important to enjoy the track.  But I made a conscious decision not to take an image related to the sample for the thumbnail of this track.  

Instead, I decided for the second time (I believe--it is at least twice) to use a picture of me.  

Now, I maybe three times as old as most of the people on this platform (gulp), but that's not ACTUALLY a picture of me as I am right now.  I asked ChatGPT what they knew about me (they knew about my stand-up comedy career) and then I asked if they could show me what I would look like as a very old man.  

...and damn if it didn't do a good job of that.  Probably TOO good.  I mean looking at this is the cause of my LATEST existential crisis.  (It also suggests that, as decrepit as I am NOW, I'd better get myself out there immediately, if I have any hope of dating again before I look like THIS--or die before I get that far...)  

Ladies?  ;)  

If art is useful for either the artist or the audience, it must be to try to share emotions in hopes that doing so allows other people to understand either you, themselves, or others, a bit better.  

I am definitely not dead (at least, not as I write this.  Someday, this information will be inaccurate.  Hopefully not too soon.)  But I'm closer than I've ever been, and if there's anything I have to share...I'd better get at it.

At  the  age  of  12,  Jack  Majic  first  picked  up  a  guitar  and  began  his  musical  journey  –  he  quickly  transitioned  into  dance  music,  through  the  form  of  dubstep  and  drum  &  bass.  It  was  this  discovery  that  ignited  the  realisation  that  mixing  and  music  production  is  something  he  is  destined  to  do.  After  exploring  the  musical  landscape  and  discovering  techno,  he  hasn’t  looked  back  since.  

Today,  Jack  can  be  found  playing  his  own  breed  of  London  techno  in  various  locations,  for  the  infamous  Stinky  Pink,  Hackney  Sounds,  and  many  of  their  peers.  He  has  had  the  honour  of  playing  alongside  D.A.V.E  The  Drummer,  Geezer,  Chris  Liberator,  Mark  EG,  Lawrie  Immersion  and  pretty  much  anyone  worth  their  salt  associated  with  the  sound.  

With  every  passing  day,  Jack  increases  his  already  impressive  knowledge  on  every  form  of  techno.  Putting  his  education  to  practise,  he  continues  to  impress  crowds  across  the  UK  and  Europe,  proving  himself  to  be  one  of  the  stand-out  cases  of  young  blood  within  the  scene.  

Moving  forward,  he  is  turning  his  gaze  towards  production.  By  combining  tried  and  tested  methods  with  modern  techniques,  Jack  crafts  his  own  unique  sound  of  London techno.  His  motivation?  To  leave  a  mark  on  the  music  that  inspired  him  to  be  a  part  of  something  bigger.

Yaz is a San Francisco-based DJ who enjoys playing tech house, deep tech, minimal, and techno. He is an active member of the Burning Man community and underground house/techno community in San Francisco.

Yaz has played all over San Francisco at all the major venues, including Public Works, Mighty / The Great Northern, Monarch, Midway, and Halcyon. He was a resident DJ at the venerated Wish Lounge for 5+ years, running his monthly Wayward party right up until the pandemic caused Wish to close. Once it was safe to do so, he has taken Wayward to its new home F8 Nightclub, and has been a resident there since August 2021. 

Yaz has collaborated with many different promoters and labels, and has opened and closed for (or shared billing with) well-known artists including John Digweed, Bob Moses, The Scumfrog, Tommy Four Seven, John Monkman, Technasia, and Marques Wyatt, to name a few.

His love for Burning Man is only rivaled by his love for music. His styles go from deep tech, minimal and techno to indie dance. You can find him on the playa playing for his camp DeMentha, and everywhere else for The Janky Barge, Airpusher, and Icarus. Yaz has also participated in many fundraisers in San Francisco for the aforementioned camps, as well as DISTRIKT, Mayan Warrior, the Salty Jacks, and others.
