A tribute to a movie.  A tribute to a decade.  A tribute to some pioneers.  

Today's Interbay track is an uptempo synth pop, nrg, club dance track with guitars.  I think that, had I the tools, I would have made this track 40 years ago--as it is crammed full with all the things that I loved then...and the things I still love, today.

The title is shared by the movie that is the source for some of the clips in this cut--the movie is a VERY '70s movie, full of car chases and an anti-hero being turned into a populist legend by an enthusiastic radio dj.  Like Smokey & The Bandit, our protagonist has to get from one place to another in a seemingly impossible amount of time, and for various reasons, the police are out to catch him.  The car in the 1971 film, a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, was paid homage to by Quentin Tarantino in Death Proof--and for lovers of crazy car chase movies, this is one of the most revered.  

Paying tribute to that movie with a track that feels like the pedal is to the metal and the nitrous is being injected.  The guitars, processed in a very 80s style, give the track a little bit of bite that might have been lacking had it just been synths-based.  

However, I did feel like the track would be missing something if I didn't also sneak in some actual singing in the track--and so, I sent Icarus out to find something that worked...and if you're listening to this track, then Icarus came back with wings unsinged.  

If you're not listening to this track, you're also not reading this...and you can send your thoughts and prayers to Icarus' family--as once again, they've been lured into mortal danger.  

I think it works.  I think it's fun.  It definitely puts a smile on my face and some pep in my step--and I hope it does the same for you!  

All I can ask (so, I will ask it) is for you to listen to the track, like it if you do, repost it or share it if you feel like others should listen to it, add it to a playlist if it fits with other songs you want to keep in rotation...and, most of all, I would love it if you followed this page, that way, you don't miss any of these daily (no, seriously, EVERY SINGLE DAY--so far!--there's a new Interbay track or remix dropping here) track drops. I first learned about kudzu all the way back when R.E.M.'s "Murmur" album came out and I was fascinated by everything about them, it, and that album cover.  

Described as the plant that ate the South, kudzu doesn't deserve that description--but what was an imported-from-japan plant that some hoped would shore up the sometimes unstable ground upon which roads and railways were built, is fast spreading and landscape covering.  Could it be related to the "meteor shit" that Jordy Verrill discovered?  (There's a reference that, if you get, will score you BIG Interbay Points!)

So, I had that image in mind when I started work on this project--I tried to express what kudzu is with the music of the song.  It covers, seemingly, everything (including the kitchen sink).  There is a decided Siouxsie & The Banshees with a little bit of Shriekback vibe here--so, it definitely earns its description as post-punk.  Part of what reminds me of Siouxsie are the east Asian elements--the angular post-punk processed guitar is, in my mind, VERY Banshee-esque.  The tom tom heavy drums fit that description as well. 

But, there's also a techno/disco element to this.  There's synths, which are sometimes trance gated.  

It truly is a good description of what I mean when I say that the best genre description for all of different sounds and styles that Interbay throws into its blender is "mutant pop."  Is it rock? Dance?  Alternative? World music? Orchestral pop?  Post-rock?

Yes.  Yes it is.    

I think you can also tell that I worked on this track during Spooky Week--as there are some very haunting elements here, even if the over all track isn't necessarily "spooky" as a whole.  

The title of the song is just silly wordplay--there's no deeper meaning to "Zuzu Kudzu."  (Or IS there?)  

The sound of Interbay is hard to put into a clearly labeled box, but it certainly makes sense in my neurodivergent brain.  I hope it interests and intrigues you enough to click play, every day--as there is a fresh Interbay track posted daily (and this will be the 540th consecutive day where an Interbay track as dropped here on SoundCloud.)

Week end

Today's Interbay track started with a simple inspiration.  Could I create a song that sounds nothing like "Take On Me" by a-ha, but could be easily mixed into or out of "Take On Me" by a-ha.  

"Just Want a Taste" is the result that the boys down in the labs helped me concoct based on that rather limited brief.  

As always, with any Interbay track, there's a lot going on.  808s, new wave beats, jazz drums, lusty lead vocals and answer backs from a kid's choir, synths a plenty, doubletime vocals, handclaps, trumpets, touches of R&B and hip hop over techno new wave???    

Yeah--it's an Interbay track.  

If there is a deeper message in today's Interbay track drop, other than "Here's a fun song for a Friday to get your weekend started," then it would be the unconscious dance that we do between stating one's desire and having the confidence to demand what you want from someone who you already know would be into it.  

...but, mostly, it's just a fun song for the weekend.   I hope you have one (just as I hope you get a taste of what you want and that whoever you want a taste of gives it to you...)

What would be the least likely topic to make a floorfilling dance track about?  

I think I found it.  Listen and see if you agree.  

There is a twisted smirk on my face as I type this...and I had a wicked smile on my face with every sample I dropped on this track.  I wish I was still dj'ing.  I would LOVE to see how people on the dancefloor would react if I dropped this track at peak time on a Saturday night.  

I know I'd played much weirder tracks on similar (if not exactly so) topics, and they've worked.  

One thing that I always enjoyed, when I was dj'ing, was when people would come up to me after a sweaty, sweaty night...and say that they had "never had so much fun in a club."  I made a point to always try to incorporate some humor in my dance mixes.  Unexpected blends, set-up/punchline sample drops, completely left field (but still workable) track selections, etc.  

I remember in the late 80s, early 90s, I was playing at the attached nightclub of a motor lodge...and I'd been the resident there for a long time, so the regulars knew I'd take care of them.  I got my hands on Eddie Murphy's "Put Your Mouth On Me"--his attempt to do some new jack swing (kind of...)  I'd had it on video (did I mention it was a video club?  It was.), but getting the 12" single allowed me to do things that simply playing the video would.  

...like scratch and drop the famous Eddie Murphy laugh (which is the last sound heard on "Put Your Mouth On Me") over...well, at least one night, I would put it into the mix constantly, over everything and anything.  I had one regular come up to me with an hour before bar time saying that they were having a great time...but they had to stop dancing, because they couldn't stop laughing anytime they heard the laugh come in...and they were worried they might get light headed and faint.  

I count that as a win.  

So, this track shouldn't be a surprise.  And, as an old...and a widower...I'm not worried that I'm advertising a condition that people might wonder if I deal with...(I'm just happy that someone might wonder about me.)  As a former stand-up comedian, I know there's no better "butt" for a joke than yourself--because EVERYONE can--and, frankly, is SUPPOSED to laugh at you.  I can take the hit.  ;)  

"Keep It Up" is a glitchy and squidgey acid tech house track with 80s club influences and lots of spoken word samples (and a repeated singing sample part.)  

If I was still making mixtapes for my friends, I'd throw this song on there and I know I'd make friends giggle when this, unexpectedly, showed up in the mix.  I hope you like it, too!

Don't Let Me Fall

Well, after a weekend of watching football...how fitting it is that this Monday starts with a punt!  

This is not the track that I originally wanted to post today, but just as we launched Icarus into the sky, the poor soul was blasted by one of the bots laser beams.  (We will try to rebuild him.)  

I'm a bit surprised, as the only thing that could have run afoul of the bots were some movie snippets--and usually the bots ignore those.  Not this morning.  

Luckily, I had another Monday worthy track ready to go today.  Monday's, here, as you may know, are when we reach back to the time when Interbay experiments were posted (along with music videos) on Facebook.  (This would be from January 2023 to May 2024, at which time I switched to posting tracks exclusively on SoundCloud.)  

This recent Monday formula is to take one of those tasks and push it through the Fun Factory that is the RRR protocol.  RRR stands for Rethink, Remake, Remix.  My goal is to take another go at these older tracks with the additional skills that experience have, hopefully, granted me.  It is also a chance to update these tracks to the standards and criteria I have for posting tracks on SoundCloud--for example, all of the tracks that I post on SoundCloud MUST have a vocal element, which was NOT true of all of the tracks I'd posted on Facebook.  

It can be fun to revisit the ideas I had then and see how I might do things differently.  And the end result is a strong Interbay track, even if you aren't at all familiar with the original (though, the tracks are still on Facebook if you want to compare and contrast.) 

This track is a burst of caffeine to wake you up on a Monday morning...or a way to pregame for heading out to the clubs on any night of the week.  Tons of energy in the bouncing bass guitar, the drums, the arpeggios...it is trying its best to live up to being worthy of its central demand that you "Don't Stop Dancing."  

Not sure what will happen to the RRR track I originally tried to post today.  Might have to be locked into the deepest level of The Vault (where only the brave...and perhaps, someday, the Patreoners, will ever have access to it.  We'll see.  I may also put it BACK through the RRR wringer one more time to take out whatever might have angered the bots and try to post it agian in the future.)
