Summer Session

Generally bouncy (4/4 and 7/8). Mellow episodes,with tenor saxophone playing softly (3/4-sort of).
The photograph was taken,between periods of rain, in my suburban garden in late September. This beautiful hoverfly is Sericomyia silentis (the Yellow-barred peat hoverfly) feeding from Japanese Anemone.. First time for the garden. Infact two female Bog flies were seen several times over two days.

Study on Overtones / Improvisation at Ställbergs Gruva was recorded during the May-June 2024 Ung Nordisk Musik composer residency at Ställbergs Gruva, an abandoned iron ore mine. Hartikainen was selected as Finland's representative composer for this residency, which held a theme of "Specificity+." Through site-specific explorations within the Örebro region, questions were asked about the location’s specificity: what significance does it have, to whom does it belong, and what is its relationship to change and transformation?

The recording took place in the old elevator machinery hall of the mine, which originally operated the first elevator that transported miners as deep as 500 meters, where they then switched to another elevator to descend further. The acoustics of the hall were extraordinary; the overtones resonated with astonishing brightness, inviting an exploration of harmonic resonances. With the hall's long reverb and natural support, even a solo saxophone could create walls of sound. Hartikainen's mastery of saxophone overtones made the improvisation sound polyphonic, creating a rich tapestry of sound that filled the space with complex, interwoven layers of melody and harmony, which eventually unraveled into a single note.

Instrumental Jazz/Rock in 7/4, featuring Tenor and Alto Saxophones.
After a short introduction on electric piano, the introduction is completed by the tenor sax. The alto sax then takes over for the main theme. This is then followed by an improvised tenor sax solo, before the alto returns with the tune. 
Composed and recorded October 2024.

Inaugural track from a sax player/multi-instrumentalist/arranger turned beat producer. A little dreamy, hip-hop, R&B, and jazz-influenced track made in logic, with a tenor sax feature in the middle. Influenced a little bit by Jacob Collier, All Washed Out, Air, and any number of other things.

Jörg S. born in Cologne, from youth on, was fascinated by all kinds of art, so he taught himself the saxophone very early. Nowadays flutes of all kind are also part of the equipment, as are jaw harps, percussion, bass, guitars and keyboards.
He was and is always involved in many band projects and session events.
In the 80s he was a saxophonist in the Adam Noidlt Intermission Orchestra with gigs in Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Basel. Very early on he also worked as a writer with live readings in the Cologne area and was a painter with large formats for many years, all in addition to his job as a graphic designer. Now, retired, devoted solely to music: home recording with the platform of choice, Soundcloud and global collaborations.

I was born in Leicester in the late 1950's. Since semi-retirement and subsequent retirement (as a Dermatologist and formerly G.P) I have spent some of my spare time trying to learn music theory. I also enjoy long distance running as well as cycling, skiing and tennis. I enjoy cooking, gardening and growing a few vegetables. And fine wine (in moderation). I enjoy insect photography, with a particular interest in hoverflies..
To my regret I never learnt a musical instrument when younger but I have listened to and been fascinated by music for as long as I can remember. The advent of the computer age has allowed me to pursue my desire to compose music. I use Logic Pro X software (and MuseScore3 for recent piano compositions). My compositions reflect my varied listening preferences (including Contemporary Classical, Jazz and  Music from other cultures around the world).
