What if that real “Indie Sleaze” was the friends we made along the way? 🥹🪩

Like I predicted back in January 2024 during my Electroclash episode (episode 51 , which you can listen to here: soundcloud.com/internetexcess/ep51), Indie Sleaze/Electroclash has come back this year with a VENGEANCE that can only be satisfied by booze, glitter, and the piss you find on a New York City street corner! 🗽🍻✨

As such, I decided to follow up said Electroclash episode with an update on the scene 9 months later, as Electroclash and Bloghaus (the combination of which has been retroactively referred to as “indie sleaze”) rears it’s head again just like I’ve been saying it would be! But then again…did Indie Sleaze ever really leave? 🤔🎉🪩⚡️

In this episode, I debate whether “Indie sleaze” is even a real thing/genre, or if it’s actually just a catch-all term used to define the combination of niche microgenres (Bloghaus, Electroclash, Scenecore), graphic design aesthetics (bright bold jewel tones and neon colors, triangular zig-zagging shapes, thin italic font, flash photography📸), and internet communities belonging to a certain time (Myspace era-musicians)….

Hmmm. “A catch-all term used to define the combination of niche microgenres, aesthetics, and internet communities belonging to a certain time”….call me crazy…but doesn’t that perfectly describe the term “Hyperpop” as well?? 😱 

As such, in this episode, I argue that a lot of the so-called “Hyperpop” scene that we discuss so often on this show has somewhat always been an extension of the Electroclash scene of the early 00’s (albeit some major differences, namely the minimalist-maximalist continuum) - and the Hyperpop artists that you *couldn’t* classify as Electroclash back during Hyperpop’s rise are rapidly metamorphosing into Electroclashian Revivalists… 🎸

The similarities between “indie sleaze” and our current era of internet excess is made apparent in this episode of Internet Excess. Hell, the very name of this show - a title I made as a better summary of what “Hyperpop” really means - is essentially a synonym for the term “Indie Sleaze” itself: an embrace of in-your-face, no-holds-barred, era-defining niche/independent music that revels in coming home with glitter on your face, revels in being messy, revels in being…Brat… 👀

Yes that’s right - Charli XCX’s “Brat” has been at the forefront of the Indie Sleaze revival, with Charli embracing the spoken-word-sing-rapping of Electroclash and Bloghaus stars like Uffie and Peaches, the disaffected verb listicle of Daft Punk’s “Technologic” on songs like “Guess” (“Buy it, use it, break it, fix it” // “Try it, bite it, lick it, spit it”), and flash photography by none other than TheCobraSnake. 🧑🏻‍🎤

But she’s not the only one! Snow Strippers’ “So What If I’m A Freak” embraces into the goth-8-bit bops of duo of Crystal Castles💎🏰, Hyperpop provocateur Brooke Candy is reviving the stomp-clap, call-and-response feminist earworms of The Ting Tings and Peaches 🍑 on songs like her bop “Juicy Fruit”, The Dare has embraced the funky, punky, minimalist blasé of LCD Soundsystem 📻, Frost Children embrace the shouty hedonism of 00’s scenesters 3OH!3, and more! “Dimes Square” NY Scene-sters have dived head-first into the hedonism of the 00’s indie NYC scene. 🔊

2024: the year Hyperpop went Indie Sleaze! ✨

And so, in this episode of Internet Excess, I did some more live DJing on the turntables, this time Dj-ing back-and-forth between 00’s Electroclash staples and their early 2020’s sonic-equivalents (like the songs listed above) as part of the “indie sleaze” (Electroclash) revivaL 💿 🎊
